Drumbaragh Emmets pay tribute to the late Maureen Monaghan

March 25, 2026

The late Maureen Monaghan

Sad to report the passing of Maureen Monaghan. Her club Drumbaragh Emmets took to social media to pay tribute to a true stalwart of the club.

In Loving Memory of Maureen Monaghan

It is with the heaviest of hearts that we mark the passing of the one and only Maureen Monaghan — known far and wide simply as "Maureen" a woman whose presence, personality, and spirit left an imprint on everyone fortunate enough to know her.

As respected and she was revered, Maureen was a true stalwart of our club and a lifelong charity campaigner, known for her tireless work on behalf of both club and community. Her passion for people, for place, and for the betterment of those around her was second to none. She gave freely, wholeheartedly, and without hesitation.

Her contribution to her beloved Drumbaragh Emmets GFC was immense. In a man's world, she paved the way for women in the GAA. Over decades of service, Maureen filled countless roles — from trailblazing treasurer to fearless fundraiser to paparazzo-style photographer.

When Maureen wasn't making moments happen, she captured them for us all to look back on (if we liked it or not!). So much so, there's a room in the Monaghan household dedicated to the club heaving with thousands of photos, newspaper clippings, videos and keepsakes.

Because it was Páirc Emmet that held a special place in her heart. In recent years, the addition of our all-weather pitches and walking track filled Maureen with immense pride. That pride lives on today in husband Séan and son Barry, who embody the same spirit of “ask not what your club can do you, but what you can do for your club” the words immortalised on Maureen's fence plate at Drumbaragh HQ.

To Séan, Vanessa, Barry, Dermot, Aimee and Cory, partners, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, relatives, neighbours, and Maureen's wide circle of friends — Drumbaragh Emmets GFC is, as it always has been, here for you.

Maureen — thank you for the memories.
