IHC semi final: McGrath leads Kilskyre Moylagh to decider

Kilskyre Moylagh's Podge Muldoon with Jason Gleeson Dunboyne during the Meath IHC semi final at Trim

Kilskyre Moylagh 3-10 St Peters Dunboyne 0-14

Storm Amy might have been a lot kinder to this part of the Country but it was a difficult day for Hurling in St Loman’s Park, Trim despite a super surface that held up very well for back-to-back matches. Wind was the problem for both matches and what was unusual in both matches was no side seemed to be able to take advantage of the wind.

Kilskyre Moylagh won the toss and choose to play against it, but it was Dunboyne that got off to a bright start racing into a five-point lead before Kilskyre Moylagh managed to register a score from Fergal Flynn on the eight minute and within a couple of minutes the two man forward line of O’Higgins and McGrath got running at the Dunboyne backline and the perfect layoff from O’Higgins left McGrath with a simple tap in for his opening goal. Both sides exchanged points from that point up to McGraths second goal in the 26th minute some great work from Tom Shine that opened the door for McGrath who jinked through the defence and executed. Going in a half time with a three-point lead at half time was something you wouldn’t have seen after the opening ten minutes of this match.

With the wind in their backs, you would have expected Kilskyre Moylagh to push on but credit to Dunboyne were the ones pushing hard and ran off four points in the opening ten minutes of the second half something that will concern management going into a final with these slow starts. Sandwiched in between those points from Dunboyne, McGrath popped up again for his third goal. From there on points were exchanged and a late goal in injury time from Dunboyne, did leave Kilskyre Moylagh with a nervous few final minutes before the celebrations could begin looking forward to a IHC Final in two weeks.

It was a difficult day for scoring points with both sides racking up the wides, so goals were always going to win matches in these conditions and on the day Kilskyre Moylagh edged it, thanks in no small part to keeper Charlie Usher who was outstanding.
