John Mahon of Muirhevna, Dundalk died on March 13th, 2014, aged 78. Son of Patrick and Mary from Thomastown, Kilkenny, he was a keen footballer in his youth, starting his career with Kilkerley before moving to Dowdallshill. An uncompromising defender, John made the Dowdallshill No.3 jersey his own over a magnificent club career that spanned 15 years. Honours won included the 1970 Louth junior football championship, when St Patricks were defeated in the final. John contested every ball fiercely and it made no difference to him if it was a championship match or a challenge game. At the height of his career, John was called upon by the Louth selectors and he also donned the Roche Emmets colours for a season before retiring from the national game. A quiet man off the field, John was held in high regard by all those who knew him.
