The sudden death on January 8th, 2017 of 46-year-old Jim McDermott from Clonkeen, Fairyhouse Road, Ratoath, County Meath and formerly of Dundalk, generated great sadness in the Wee County and beyond. A native of New York, Jim grew up in Ravensdale, where his father was well known in GAA circles as he ran a shop on the corner of the Newry Road and Armagh Road. Jim was very much involved in the GAA club in Ratoath, where his three daughters Shauna, Caoimhe and Alannah played camogie. As coach, he led Ratoath to three All-Ireland Feile titles, as well as coaching Meath camogie teams. Although he lived on the Meath, he kept a keen interest in the fortunes of Clan na Gael and Louth. At Jim's funeral mass in the Holy Trinity Church, gifts brought to the altar to symbolise his life included a Ratoath jersey and some hurls.
