An instrumental figure in the development of the town's Credit Union, Sean 'John' McDermott of Dublin Road, Dundalk passed away on Wednesday, March 8th, 2017. Sean was a founder member of the St Patricks GAA club in Lordship in 1953 and made a massive contribution to both the club and community life in the area. The club's first-ever secretary, he was made honorary life president of St Patricks GFC in recognition of his vital input into the GAA club. Sean was chairman when the club won its first major trophy - the 1960 Louth JFC - and he was a proud man when the Pats collected the 2003 SFC and went on to become the dominant force in Wee County football for more than a decade. He was also a keen Louth supporter and frequently attended their matches, as well as other games in Croke Park.
