Ulster Championship Draw 2017. - 2 Like(s)

Replying To JonSmith:  "I said it before and I'll say it again, anyone who thinks that a player in their mid twenties who hasn't yet played Senior Intercounty Football can come in and even hold their own (never mind make an impact) in Division 1 or the Ulster Championship, is absolutely fooling themselves. Sean I agree with Fred, saying it's a pity that McGleenan will have to work with the same panel is hugely disrespectful. It's bad enough that we have nameless people on here slabbering like that, I would have thought someone who sees the slog those lads put in up close might have a bit more cop on. You typify the know it all element in the county, there's a reason you're lining out the field while men like Hyland and McGleenan are managing the team, you'd do well to remember that and humble yourself. There's a great bunch of lads in there now, the best we've had in over a decade. I would say additions will be few and far between. Been a long time since we had a new manager it will be interesting to see how McGleenan handles the task."
Agree wholeheartedly with this post. These players & terry Hyland deserve tremendous respect for what they have done for Cavan football from the shambles it was under the previous management. From being lucky to avoid relegation to the basement division to now playing in the top tier & some geniuses on here slating them. Lots more to do so let's row in behind the new manager & our panel please

The Gaa decision making system is absolutely ridiculous. Supporters making sacrifices in respect of work & driving to enniskillen to discover game called off 25 mins before throw in !!! 3 wks after similar fiasco in Omagh. Surely protocols have to be introduced & some consideration for supporters.

Replying To cavanblueman:  "Here we go again, that time of year when the footballing experts start nominating players for County positions. Lads, the standard of football in the Championship has been absolutely awful, so any decent footballer will stand out, but it doesn't meant they're good enough for inter county. How can anyone say Dillon has stood out, he's been injured for most of and only played a bit part. Folks - Cavan Football is gone backwards, the club scene is joke, it needs fixing. How can you have clubs playing Division One League Football playing Intermediate Championship Football? Surely, if a club is good enough to play in Division One in the league every week, they should be playing Senior Championship? I'll say it again, the league needs to be revamped, taking seriously and more competitive. As for fixtures, I would seriously question the motive behind the Co Board fixing the Gaels match for Ballinagh and then moving it to Cornafean, you wouldnt put cattle on those pitches this time of year, there was plenty of good dry, open prunty pitches around the County, but nevertheless, the Gaels did what they had to do, and Ive no doubt they'll go all the way, unless they meet Donegal (I meant Kingscourt) who no doubt will once again put 15 men behind the ball and try to stop the Gaels playing football."
The point I was making about Dillon was that in the 3 games I saw him play, injured or not he possesses the type of athleticism & power that should be harnessed into the senior set up. We are lacking a focal point at full forward & I haven't seen any better option in the club championship so far

Would agree with reformation on 11 out of 15 in personal on his team outlined for Sunday but with a few positional switches. However I agree 100% with him in that we have to get players settled into positions asap and this was my point a few days ago. My team would be; Galligan Reilly Dunne J Mcloughlin K Clarke Faulkner Brady McKiernan Mccutcheon/o rourke G smith Moynagh M Reilly Mcveety N McKiernan C madden As highlighted here earlier we ran Tyrone to 1 pt last year & had chances to beat them so let's go for it on Sunday by way of intensity, energy & controlled aggression. We have nothing to lose & let's get some confidence back in the team

Replying To Breffnisbest:  "Surely some little part of the Credit should be given to the 2 men that were there for 18 months up to the Ulster Final."
Also huge credit to the coaches & selectors of the various development squads that brought these lads through from u14 level despite the rubbish that people spouting on here. It's a coordinated effort from all groups & great to see it being effective

Just back from castlebar & delighted to get our first win of the campaign. Thought we started poor & took nearly 20 mins to get our first score from play but we grew in confidence from there onwards & the goal just before half time was a great boost. We worked extremely hard & as I posted yesterday I think our team is finally taking shape. Rory at full back, Killian back in the half back line, Gearoid mid field all played immense. Don't know why it took so long to get them in their correct positions but hopefully we have consistency now. Also smith & mcvitty very impressive. Might not be happy reading for some posters here but I think we went back to terry Hyland's style of play & the lads seemed a lot more comfortable. Would have to say I was disappointed with mayo & thought they lacked urgency throughout & only for Keegan & Kirby they were extremely average today. Congrats to the lads & management. Great vibes from cavan supporters after the game

Strategic plan for Cavan football - 1 Like(s)
After attending yesterday's all Ireland final & watching the mayo-Kerry semi final what are people's honest opinion on where the cavan team stand in comparison to the top teams & what are we doing to close the gulf that exists. We cannot just continue as we have over the past years hoping that our underage success will lead to a Ulster championship winning campaign. In my opinion we are within a group of probably 15 teams that are competitive, capable of beating a lot of teams on our day but falling more & more behind the top 3/4 teams. So how are we going to attempt to improve our team. Is there a strategic plan in place via the development squads at all levels to produce more physically athletic players ? Is there consistency of coaching at underage levels to produce game plans & styles of play suitable to our players strengths? Is the county board providing the guidance & resources to facilitate sustained success ? Genuine discussion lads please as without a plan we are doomed to continued failure & disappointment

That was my post last September in respect of what direction & guidance was been supplied to our county teams. This is my first post of 2018 & after attending the 2 home games in the Mckenna cup my heart goes out to the young lads who represented our county especially last night. Yes some of them are no where near good enough for the team but How could they be expected to be competitive against the ulster champions whom had 10/11 of there starting team & us with 2 players from last years team!!!! Fredflint stated it before the game give the lads s chance by st least playing a few more experienced players. My point remains where is the county board in this fiasco ? what plan is in place to provide progress ? Why are so many players dropping out in Comparison to other counties & what is being done to prevent this ?

New Cavan manager - 1 Like(s)
delighted with the news & would like to wish McGleenan best wishes in his new post. really hope he selects his backroom team from the listing of strong successful candidates I mentioned last week. imperative that he appoints people that have been winners in management & whom have been attending games at all levels in the championship to advise the new manager. respect for Terry Hyland and the work he put in over his tenure as he has left us in a strong position to hopefully take the next step in comparison to the messes that T Carr and V Andrews left behind....

Replying To ponger:  "What you on about. We retreat back behind our 45 just like other teams when we don't have the ball. You can't blame just Down for it everyone is at it. They just retreat a bit more than others. The difference in the second half yesterday was we moved our defensive line to midfield and hit them hard.. As for highest scores that has nothing to do with our defensive setup. We burn teams in the first half and we have the fitness, power and a bench in the second half. Not being disrespectful to other d3 teams but down and westmeath were the only testing games so far. I guarantee if you ask Graham he'd take 10 of that game against down yesterday. Championship ain't that far away"
the team is in a great position currently. substantial improvement in performances this year so far & strenght in depth excellent and hopefully will improve further with Conor Brady, Oisin Brady & Conor Smith to return over the next few weeks. the only criticism i had off our previous performances was the lack of a goal scoring cutting edge and this was answered on Sunday. extremely positive so far and if we can win the Div 3 league will leave us in a great position to take on Armagh in Breffni. they will have the benefit of playing 7 games in a much higher standard but our progress is consistent and will leave us entering that game in a positive mindset

Looking at that list of games let's call a spade a spade & say that for a team that played division 1 football in 2017 out 4 home games and the away game against Clare have to be victories. After that we should be there or thereabouts for promotion. Anyone talking about relegation needs there head examined. Big year for Mattie definitely. No more excuses, impulse substitutions & childish interviews please. Let's deliver on what he promised Day 1

Replying To cavanblueman:  "Its only October and the fools are out in force already, happens every year, Cavan will do this, Cavan will do that. Have you learned nothing over the years. Tipperary & Clare will have no fear of Cavan, in fact, both of them will see Cavan as very winnable matches.

We have a panel of players who dont know how to score or play attacking football, we have players that run into tackles & players that cant pass. And to cap it all, the best forward in the County is 33 years old and would run any our defenders ragged, and yet theirs people think that we have the god given right to be promoted to Division One.

With the exception of the Gaels, the Senior Championship was absolutely terrible, you wouldn't pick any County Footballer from any team bar the Gaels."
Well sorry for having an opinion, I thought this was a discussion board & didn't realise we had to agree with your ideas. We all know the limitations in the cavan squad to well but forgive me for thinking that playing Louth, Meath, down & Tipperary at home & Clare away are winnable. We gained promotion in a far tougher div 2 two years ago & people were still calling for Terry's head. Yes Tipperary beat us in the championship but we were competitive in most of our div 1 games last year & surely we have to be optimistic of our chances

Replying To kildare blue:  "The Tipperary game will tell the tale. Win and we will have 11 points and be promoted. Lose and we will will end up with 9 points and most likely finish third in the Division and miss out. The table won't lie after 7 games. Forget the permutations, go out and beat Tipperary boys!"
The way the games fell in the group we had the 2 best teams in the last 2 games so it was likely it was always going to be decided on the last day. Huge difference in standard of div 2 to division 1 & while it would be extremely disappointing not to secure promotion given the position we put ourselves in if we are not able to beat either of the 2 best teams we have no business back in division 1. Am still confident that we can beat tipp especially if we get an extra week recovery. Home advantage & revenge for last year together with what should be a big vocal home support can also make a difference

Replying To asdfg:  "Very dissapointing stuff last night, If that's our strongest panel in 10 years then things aren't looking great. It's like groundhog day following Cavan teams, bad decesion making, too many wides/dropped shorts, dodgey referee decesions and silly fouls. At some point it has to stop becoming unlucky."
huge opportunity missed last night. i thought the team battled extremely hard against a strong Monaghon team that had a game under their belt already. we should have been alot further in front at half time and wasted 7/8 scoring chances with balls falling short or crazy pot shots in the last 15-20 minutes. also have to say that i thought the substitutions and volume of them in the last 15 mins was ridiculous. they weakened our team & totally disrupted our structure allowing Monaghon to dominate the middle third of the field. seemed to be pre-arranged substitutions rather than actually reading the game on its own merits

Whatever.....I'm not going to get embroiled in your pettiness Anyway for genuine football supporters on here I would have to say that the two players in my opinion whom have stood out after watching kingscourt a few times in the championship are Joe Dillon & Alan Clarke. I know both have/are involved with the seniors but Dillon was only a bit part player for cavan this year. His power & athletism is serious & would hope he could be coached into a full forward role which has been a problem spot. Also if Clarke could be brought back I think he adds strength, composure & a commanding presence that we lack in centre half back area

Didn't post my opinion on Sat eve previously as was very disappointed leaving breffni. On reflection the performance was probably the poorest from this cavan team since Roscommon bet us in the qualifiers in 2015. We looked lethargic, leaderless & clueless. I would of assumed that with our break last weekend & Donegal having a tough game against the dubs that we would have been fresh & eager early on. However we have to support our team & management now & not just when we are winning. A few adjustments in my opinion can make us competitive again & while it is now unlikely that we will stay in div 1 will facilitate the teams development for the championship. A) put G McKiernan midfield & leave him there B) stop messing around with Killian Clarke in midfield. It has been proven in every game so far that he cannot play there & we are losing the influence of him in our half back line C) play Rory dunne full back. Yes he has been caught out in a few occasions but we need stability & consistency in team selections D) play P Faulkner centre half back our best player to date & leave him there E) give N McKiernan a decent chance at full forward. He is tall, strong & more aggressive than Argue for that position F) stop making impulsive early substitutions just for the sake of it & playing players totally out of position. It's bad for players confidence & looks clueless Overall it's only early march & while disappointing to date management & players have time to turn this around

Even allowing for the fact that cavan played extremely poorly with a purely individualistic mindset that is probably the best u21 team performance I have seen in years. For people who could not attend the game tonight Donegal gave an absolute exhibition of team work from full length hand passing moves ending in scores, speed of transition from defence to attack & mixture of kick passing & hand passing. Also individually they had unbelievable pace carrying ball, unerring accuracy. Think it's fair to say they would have defeated a lot of senior teams based on their performance tonight
