The sliotar from the famous 1939 All-Ireland SHC final given to John Power Lacken by Kilkenny player Jim Langton.

A sliotar from Kilkenny's famous 1939 All-Ireland SHC final victory over Cork at Croke Park, on 3 September 1939, the day World War II broke out, sold for €750 at Fonsie Mealy Auctioneers yesterday.

''To John Power Lacken 1940, Jim Langton All-Ireland 1939" is inscribed in blue biro on the well minded match ball. It was given to John Power Lacken by Jim Langton, who played at right half forward for Kilkenny that historic day and pocketed the sliotar as a souvenir.

The match saw Jimmy Phelan score two goals with the help of Langton, in a decider nicknamed the "thunder and lightning final" because it was played during a violent thunderstorm and in lashing rain.
