Kerry were crowned New York senior football champions for the first time in a decade following a dramatic extra-time victory over holders Westmeath at Gaelic Park on Sunday.

Ardfert man Bobby O’Regan was the hero after he lofted over the winning point from a 45-metre free with the last kick of the game to hand the Kingdom a 2-14 to 1-16 victory. Sean Horan (Scartaglin), Pa Warren (Gneeveguilla), James Walsh (Knocknagoshel), Liam Kearney (Spa) and Cillian Langan (Tarbert) were also prominent for the winners who had former Down star Niall Madine at full forward.

The Westmeath line-up featured former Dublin All-Ireland winners Shane Carthy, Eric Lowndes and Emmet O Conghaile, Kildare sharpshooter Jack Robinson as well as Kerry men Robbie Wharton, Adam Curran, Kieran Murphy and Gavin O’Brien.

It was Westmeath’s fifth final loss of the year in the Big Apple across both grades, having also come up short in the SHC final against Tipperary a few weeks ago.
