Mayo GAA has paid tribute to Padraic Monaghan who passed away after a long illness earlier this week.

Living in the South Dublin suburb of Templeogue for many years where he was heavily involved with St Jude’s GAA, Padraic won three Mayo SFC titles with his native Garrymore in 1979, ’81 and ’82. Garrymore contested the All-Ireland Club SFC final in ’82, only to come up short against Nemo Rangers.

He also captained UCG to Sigerson Cup success in 1980, having won a Hogan Cup medal with St Colman’s College, Claremorris three years earlier. He later coached many St Jude’s teams and players, including eight-time Dublin All-Ireland SFC winner Kevin McManamon.

"Mayo GAA are saddened to hear of the passing of Padraic Monaghan, Templeogue and formerly of Scardaune, Claremorris,” a Mayo GAA statement read.

"Padraic played wing-back on the St. Colman’s College team that captured the Hogan Cup in 1977. He then captained UCG, now University of Galway, to a Sigerson Cup in 1980. Padraic also won three County Titles with Garrymore in 1979, 1981 and 1982. He was also part of the 1982 All-Ireland Final team. Padraic was also a former player on the Mayo Senior, U21 and Minor panels.

"We offer our sympathies also to all in CLG Naomh Jude and Garrymore GAA Club and would like to express our deepest sympathy to Padraic’s wife, son and daughter, family, friend and his GAA club at this sad time."

Padraic, whose funeral took place in Templeogue yesterday, is survived by his wife Mary, son Brian, daughter Fiona, mother Dymphna, daughter-in-law Lauren, grandchildren Finn, Cara and Bran, brothers Tommy, Johnny, Liam and Paul, sisters Eileen, Anne and Dymphna.
