| Cian O Sullivan has swept for Dublin on many occasions, maybe not an out and out sweeper this year as other teams tried to nullify him by putting a threatening forward on him that he would have to pick up, Like every team they filter 10-12 back behind the ball when defending. Cavan would not get a forward into the Dublin panel theDagger1986 (Cavan) - Posts: 181 - 03/11/2016 12:29:31 1931186Link 0 |
| Cian o Sullivan is their centre half back. It's his job to defend. He doesn't push forward so that makes him look like a sweeper. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 03/11/2016 12:45:04 1931192Link 0 |
| What point are you getting at then? Is it that you think Dublin forwards all attack and don't defend? And only their defenders defend? The notion that Dublin play the purest football of anyone in the country is one of the biggest myths in GAA. They were notoriously defensive in 2011, as they had to be to win the all ireland. They attacked a bit more in 2012 and were beat, probably got the mix right in 2013, attacked in 2014 and were wiped by Donegal, and have been defensive in their setup the past 2 years. Ciaran Kilkenny played much of this year at wing back. If Terry Hyland had played a talented forward in the back line you would be one of the many blinkered posters on this forum calling for his head. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5306 - 03/11/2016 15:08:30 1931234Link 1 |
| The point I'm getting at is Dublin don't bring forwards back as sweepers like Hyland had Martin Reilly . All he did was play the ball latterely and backways in his own half backline. Watch Flynn and Connolly and both wing half backs handpass and kick at pace to turn defence in to attack quickly. That's the key .. not laboured slow lateral handpassing across your own 45 m line. Move it fast to your inside forward line who shouldn't have to come 90 metres out from goal looking for it. Awwwwnow (Cavan) - Posts: 1050 - 03/11/2016 15:55:02 1931251Link 0 |
| It's not often I agree with Joe Brolly, but after one of Dublin's games this year (Meath I think), he highlighted a 60 yard kick Connolly hit into Bernard Brogan. He stated that any other manager except for Jim Gavin would have absolutely slated his player for doing this and that he'd have been justified in doing so as it was a 50/50 ball at best risking giving up possession. He made the point that NO OTHER TEAM in the country has the quality of footballer that Dublin have in order to be able to play such direct ball in attack. And he was right. Look what happened when Mayo played quick ball into Jason Doherty - he got eaten alive. Unless you have a McManus, Geaney, etc. the days of giving your corner forward quick ball is simply gone as he doesn't have the support runner there to lay off to given the demands of the game where half forwards now must track back. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5306 - 04/11/2016 09:58:04 1931425Link 0 |
| Quick ball will work.. not all the time but it works. Look at brogan for example. He might get 5/6 possessions a game but he wastes very few. He can score or lay off. But it's his movement off the ball that's his greatest asset. Creating space for forwards or wing backs coming through. Mattie will get us playing the long ball in and hopefully stop the stupid lateral backways football that has crippled us lately. I can see a fella like Paul o Connor being a big player under Mattie. | We don't have a Bernard Brogan - not many counties do. I agree with your second point, someone like O'Connor, Enda Reilly, even Keating, could work well in a game plan like that if played properly. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5306 - 04/11/2016 11:47:37 1931463Link 0 |
| I have not seen Paul about the place yet is he around or outside the country. I think Paul has great ability but he so prone to injury. I wonder is this shoulder problem like his cousin a inherited gene. Be good to see him moving about the half forward line and taking his shots that we know he is well capable of taking. Any truth in the rumor that David Givney has emigrated. Be nice to see a panel of players sorted over the next six weeks or so and see how they go. | Don't think Givney is emigrating but have heard he will not be committing next year. If true, huge loss. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5306 - 04/11/2016 19:29:17 1931628Link 0 |

Looking up our new Managers first thoughts so far is really encouraging. He seems very enthusiastic and being a young man he is exactly what Cavan needed after the Terry years. BreffniDub (None) - Posts: 377 - 08/11/2016 13:10:03 1932688Link 0 |
| Cian McEnroe struggles to start with Castlerahan? Agree on the other though. Some of names I seen on celt would not be near up to inter county level however I believe they are only trying out players theDagger1986 (Cavan) - Posts: 181 - 08/11/2016 14:29:28 1932723Link 0 |

| I don't think the players that were involved with the intermediate and senior final and Ulster are not coming in yet so the names you are mentioning would not be on the scene yet but I expect they will over the next few weeks. | I think we all agree, especially Tomsmith who pulled him from footballing obscurity 2 years after he was a county minor, a year after he was named junior player of the year and 6 months after he started training with the Cavan senior panel. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5306 - 10/11/2016 10:00:00 1933223Link 1 |
