Anyone who thinks that we will be able to take a club player doing well in the Club Championship who has not as yet played intercounty football and expect them to be able to hold their own anywhere past the first few McKenna Cup games is absolutely fooling themselves. They would be going up against lads that have been getting top conditioning coaching since the age of 14, have been playing the game at intercounty speed and power for years.. It's simply too much to catch up on. Inactive x5 (Cavan) - Posts: 1452 - 31/08/2016 18:51:10 1908823 Link 0 |
Not sure what you're getting at with that post Sean. . I think you're implying that an outside manager would have a Cavan selector tell him who to draft into the panel and there's likely to be bias on behalf of said selector. Is that not the exact same if we go with an internal manager?? I didn't think Terry showed any bias in his panel selection. I don't think there are ANY (yes, ANY) players in the county who were not given a fair chance by the previous management in terms of getting into the Cavan setup. His team selection was a slightly different story, but I felt he was always working with the best we had available which was a good start. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts:1754 - 31/08/2016 13:50:37 1908673 I would assume if an outside manager was got he would be working with his own crew so cavanman47 (Cavan) I am not implying anything of the sort. BUT for him to hear of any outside players that are showing potential he would have to depend on listening to those that I am refereeing too. ================================================================================================================== JONSMITH are you saying that we have to proceed with whats on the panel for as long as they are not able to play Intercounty again. Such a load of nonsense ???there is no point then of a development squads ect because they will not be able to play at what you say a higher level because they are not strong or fit enough. This is why Cavan are where they are at this moment in time then if this is the case A new manager has to work with the current squad so whats the point in bringing in an outsider that been the case. I can tell you it does not happen in other counties so this is new to me. Young lad's reading your post will probably say whats the point if what you say is true. A new management team I would hope will select their own 30 odd players and leave the door open to introduce new lad's as well. I think the county board have to commended for their efforts thus far albeit they have been unsuccessful. James Horan and Pat Gilroy were both approached as was Paul Curran (former Ballymun Kickhams manager). All three declined the position, however it is a good sign to see that the co.board went after the best available. It's just a shame they couldn't commit. Ned saying they 'couldn't commit' is misleading. Truth is they said 'No' to the job offer JamsieMac (Cavan) - Posts: 482 - 31/08/2016 21:29:54 1908869 Link 0 |
Same thing is it not? You were personally talking to them all. Fair play. Great to have someone with such inside info on the forum.

I don't think it's unthinkable that a club player can make the step up, but it is very very rare in modern GAA. You are right - any new panel will be composed of 95% of what is there and IMO rightly so as they are the best footballers in Cavan (unlike the panels selected by the previous 3 or 4 managers) cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 01/09/2016 09:25:04 1908950 Link 0 |

Such a load of B******s if you think that what we have in at the moment are the best Cavan have well Cavan are in big trouble. Take off the blinkers for god sake and try and study form before Cavan end up in fast slide and another 15 or 20 years to try and pick another 20 or so that might hack it. Wake up it's about progress and to make progress you have to weed out the chaff plain and simple, loyalty to all is a recipe for disaster. Folks, after what happened in Clones, replay against Tyrone, the new manager will have to take a long hard look at the talent available to him. The team that was wiped out in Clones will not get us where we need to get to. kildare blue (Cavan) - Posts: 578 - 01/09/2016 10:46:04 1908998 Link 0 |
Nowhere did I say loyalty. Nowhere! What I said is I believe 95% of what is on the panel for 2016 is the best we have. I know how committed you are to Cavan and I know you have no hidden agenda like so many on here, but until you're willing to put names to your claims that some are being ignored then it's going to be very hard to have any objective discussion with you Sean. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 01/09/2016 11:30:02 1909037 Link 0 |
Why?? Isn't it better to aim to be competitive in 10 months time with a group of players who have shown OVER TIME to be the best in the county rather than base it on a 6 or 7 game competition over 2 months? For example, should David Givney be dropped from the panel as he hasn't had an impact during the club championship?? cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 01/09/2016 11:32:28 1909042 Link 0 |
The problem in Clones in replay was tactical. So naive and open that the concession of goals was inevitable.

Take Kingscourt as a prime example - they are the county champions but I honestly think that all of their players who are good enough for Cavan have been given a chance in the past few years. From memory, from the 15 that started last years final, they had James Farrelly, Barry Reilly, Padraig Faulkner, Philip Tinnelly, and Alan Clarke on the panel under Hyland. Have they anyone better?? I honestly think that's the case with just about any club if you were to ask me to chose another one. cavanman47 (Cavan) - Posts: 5193 - 01/09/2016 15:58:38 1909203 Link 0 |
