Hyland to continue with Cavan

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

So being a kick of a ball away from Monaghan justifies another year of the same. No mention of the fact that Monaghan were off form the day we played them, were there for the taking and we couldn't. No acknowledgement that we couldn't do what Sligo and Fermanagh achieved against Roscommon. No mention of our tactical ineptitude, our poor player resource utilisation, our indecision or our late-late substitutions. A kick of a ball is all that matters.

I posted last year about us being on hold at our level and needing expertise to raise us to the next level. 12 months later I believe that we are at exactly the same stage, not having progressed at all from July 2014. The CB appear to be happy with that performance by endorsing Terry for another year. Perhaps this was out of a sense of obligation to honour his contract term but to me it is a cop-out and an abdication of responsibility. Surely there were performance milestones in this contract that if not met allowed the CB to terminate.

So we can now look forward to seeing new faces during the McKenna Cup and the return of the usual favourites for the league and championship. There's a word for doing the same things and expecting different outcomes. It's very frustrating as a passionate supporter to know what lies ahead and not being able to look forward to it or get excited about it. Monaghan and Fermanagh, two of our closest local rivals are putting us to shame with their fully deserved success and their attitude to their football. The question is why is our CB not as ambitious as our neighbours?

Not surprised.
Not happy either.
Terry just hasn't got what it takes.

I haven't posted in a while or read the boards in while because the negativity was nauseating. I am a Cavan supporter first and foremost. I'm not pro Terry or anti Terry. I appreciate what he has done and I belive he is a great football man. However a change was needed. Players cannot be listening to the same voice for so long. Also some players are in the comfort zone with him in charge and don't have to justify selection. Therefore less hungry. If he decided to stay on fair enough but clubs should have had a say. Also if I'm being cynical I hope this is not connected to the state of the finances. Taking the cheap and easy option.

this is very bad news for cavan football, another year wasted. as a previous poster said above, we needed change to get bite. No inform players are asked into the panel, its the same lads in the same places. Was a young wing back from Kingscourt very impressive in last years championship, now maybe he was asked in and turned it down? I don't know, definatly deserved a call up

By any chance was Donal Og Cusack referring to Cavan Co Board when speaking on Sunday Game.....? How dare Cavan Co Board treat football people players, clubs, fans with such utter contempt, don't be surprised when even fewer turn out to support Cavan next year. This decision shows a complete lack of vision, ambition or knowledge of football on the part of those who made it, do any of them know anything about football and to think this was unanimous? There are a number of 'operators' complicit in this and the sooner they get moved on out of Co Board the better. Alas it will be too late for a generation of players who have seen their effort and commitment abused and wasted. The County Board have been clapping themselves on the back for the great talent we have in the county. That talent emerged as a result of the work of Nicholas Walsh , Patricia Conroy, Peter Donnelly and Dermot Mc Cabe over the years in the development squad system. The development squads since 2002-03 have produced a plethora of players schooled in the basic skills , educated about diet, nutrition, mental preparation etc and passionate about playing for Cavan. That conveyor belt of talent has been inappropriately used and mismanagement, incompetence and favouritism have allowed huge numbers of those players be undermined, disillusioned and discarded by the current system. Shame on the people responsible for this.

Well said shannon 414 it's a disgrace and the clubs in the county need to step up to the plate and not let this happen , Cavan football has gone back 10 years under this management team , Cavan supporters are outnumbered 3 to 1 at every game because of this management team . I am ringing breffni park today to cancel my club breffni and will not go to see my own county team until something constructive is done for players and supporters alike

I wonder what convinced the CB and the players to keep the same management team?
It was hardly all the success we've had over the last few years and the stunning attacking football we've produced.
For all we really have is a reasonable defence an ON and OFF midfield and no real out and forward. You can also throw in a lot of indiscipline which cost us dearly and there you have it.
Even when we played Roscommon they had more support than we had.
Just goes to show what faith the fans had in the present set up.
Hope I'll be eating my words at the end of next season but I doubt it.

I agree with everything said above, but the issue of possible milestones is an interesting one.

Let's not forget just how bad we were 4 years ago! What would the milestones have been at the time? Put yourself back in 2011 and look at the state of the county set-up and what it had achieved in the decade previous (i.e. nothing!)

Now set some milestones. . .

1. League promotion to division 2 and consolidation at that level. Done
2. An All-Ireland quarter final appearance. Done
3. An Ulster title? It's honestly hard to know if this would have been considered a minimum requirement considering we were probably 7th or 8th in Ulster at the time.

Look, I'm as frustrated as any true Cavan supported can be, but looking at it objectively, we are in a much better place than before Terry took over. That's not the frustrating part and his tenure should not be considered a failure. What frustrates me is the overwhelming feeling that he has taken us as far as he can and the county board is happy for another year of the same.

Darbec.... You are totally correct in what you say... I know Terry is a great football man but surely he can see that the fans have lost faith in his woefull style of football.... Anybody who pays in or supports this set up needs their heads looked at.. I will follow your lead and cancel my contributions and stay well clear of Briffni park in 2016 if there is no change...

Terry Hyland is staying another year, but is he keeping the same back room team? Has anyone heard?
Maybe they'll go back to the drawing board and work on a new gameplane, it's badly needed.
Leadership is needed and tough decisions have to be made, whether unpopular or not. I agree with one poster who alluded to the fact that there's a cosy cartel in the Co. Board and they are controlling everything. That;s not healthy for the future is that's the case.
I agree with the good work done by the Dev squad people like Patricia Conroy, Finbar OReily, Peter Donnelly, Andy Mc Govern and all.
Any truth in the rumour that Dermot Mc Cabe did not attend any of the U 16 Gerry Reilly Tournament games? Surely as Coaching Officer he should at the very least show his support ? Thoughts people .

Disgraceful decision. Hang your heads in shame whoever is responsible for this obscenity. Cavan senior football has been one sorry episode this past two seasons, and the travesty continues. Based on the current downward trajectory, Hyland will have us relegated next year alongside the usual early Ulster and qualifier exit. He peaked in 2013 and has been living off the Derry match ever since. Promotion to division 2 was welcome, but championship is the yardstick, and his record is dismal.

I said it before, and I will reiterate the point again. Cavan GAA won't be getting another red cent from me until change is made, and I know plenty of other fans who aren't happy, all you had to do was gauge the reaction on social media. What we should have strived for was an outside proven manager to coach a solid bunch of players who have untapped potential. Is that too much to ask? Is it? Tipperary, Derry, Laois, Cork, all counties where the manager walked when things didn't work out. Why doesn't our man do likewise? We saw Ciaran Whelan call it as it is on the Sunday Game after the farcical Roscommon game. We haven't kicked on, the future is not blue, and we're ranked 8 out of 9 in our province. Now doesn't that seem familiar? Oh yeah, because that's exactly where we were when Hyland took charge.

As for the players, I firmly expect plenty more defections and there's not a hope of enticing the exiles back either I'd imagine. We're a laughing stock, Monaghan and Fermanagh both with proven outside managers and look at the incredible benefits it has brought them, we're insane in Cavan, doing the same thing again and again expecting a different result. If it's broke FIX IT, but no, this is the antithesis of common sense.

The paltry crowds will be even worse next year, we're doing serious untold damage to ourselves, you can't persist with a failed approach, I heard Cavan GAA enlisted the help of a group of businessmen to help them with their finances, perhaps we'd be better use them for personnel advice, when you have a project and the project leader isn't cutting the mustard, you change him.

Sentiment should have no place in decisions like this, localism first, Cavan football second.

So walking away will solve the problem? \

Why don't you do something that will effect a change? Club rep, county board rep, supporter rep?

You are like a broken record Ned, we know what you think why the need to spew out your negative bile 100 times. Why don't you go and spend some time with your club and stop the constant moaning, do something constructive. Good luck to Terry and the lads next year.

When we are relegated to Division3 next February/March he should be told to go then and not keep him for the Ulster campaign.
If those of you that don't want hyland and his management it's very easy to get rid of him. At the AGM all the clubs have to do is place a no confidence motion to get rid of them but make sure that you have the full support of the clubs for there are 17 votes from the top table and they will vote to keep them.
Another way around this is get someone to run for chairman and some of the other positions this way you will really upset things. There is nothing stating that a position on the high table cannot be contested.
Unfortunately the secretary is a full time employee and cannot be ousted. He does not have a vote so I don't know why he is one of the executives in the first place.
Maybe time that his roll was changed to what he was employed as which was administrator and to vote in a secretary who is unpaid but will have a vote and it's the way it should be.
I wonder how many more counties have a full time secretary that would be an interesting one and as we are strapped for cash maybe we don't need a full time secretary at all.

Reading about Ger Loughnane in Independent today seems Cavan is not the only county poorly served by its County Board. That together with the nauseating reporting of the matter in the local newspaper with no genuine critical analysis of the situation, looks like the county board control the media too, very worrying. I hear a lot of people around the county talking of withdrawing their Club Breifne sponsorship all very dismal disheartening stuff. The players must be sickened at all of this. It is not people just moaning as suggested by one poster here, there is genuine disbelief at the ineptitude of the group that made this decision. Does anyone know was it a secret vote or a show of hands at the meeting. Show of hands is the Kalashnikov of choice of all good dictatorships!

I've a great idea. Ned and mowbar and their fellow cranks. I'm sure great Gaa men like you are members of your club. Go down to your next committee meeting and propose a vote against terry. Since ye represent the views of the vast majority of supporters ( in your own minds at least) you should have no problem getting support. Then when the vote comes through your club committee instruct your county board delegate to support the motion and then terry will be gone and you'll never have to moan and whinge again. That's how Gaa democracy works, not another word from ye until you step up and do something instead of whinging.
