Mayo V Cavan

Getting back to the Mayo Cavan game, and whilst all the talk of scoring forwards or not is relevant I'm not sure how much Cavan pushed to really compete in the game.

For starters they dropped 2 of the full forward line and started 2 additional defenders, They sat deep, yet they didn't put any real pressure on the Mayo forwards who at a canter took 20 scores. Mayo never threatened our goal as they didn't need to. They won the game pulling up and never needed top get out of 2nd gear.

Attitude either from the setup of the starting team or the team during the game wasn't good. To me they coughed up the game, as with Dublin and then to a winner takes all against Roscommon.

I really wanted to see Cavan have a cut a Mayo put they just never did which was really disappointing as we don't really know where we are at.

We all know the limitation of the squad, yet this is the same squad that was capable of competing with and beating both Monaghan & Tyrone (Paddy Lynch aside)

Replying To breffnibluewhite:  "you should be happy with the under age set ups at the moment then as there is no defensive set up at all in place and players including forwards also seem to have great freedom to play with very little instruction on what to do. It is surely only a matter of time until brilliant forwards who can beat fermanagh and antrim start to emerge again with this new found freedom."
Did you see the U-20 team play against Derry…? Obviously not… In a must win knockout game all the players in defence…. You will never unearth a decent forward with that type of coaching…

Replying To countrytool:  "There is a huge lack of belief in the complete Cavan set up from under age to senior. Also, a huge gulf in quality coaching in our under age set up. When you here what was going on with the U 20s and then you look at Tyrone U 20s yesterday, wow, we are light years behind."
Belief is a buzz word since McGuinness' return but I'd agree belief is a big issue in Cavan. If we had been playing Monaghan in Castlebar, would we have been taking pot shots from the corner flag? I don't think so. Even in general life outside of sport, I would say Cavan people lack belief or a bit of arrogance which can be helpful.

On Saturday, the first half was a marvellous opportunity to have a go at Mayo; a strong wind behind us, no sweepers, great conditions. The balance of the team was wrong and we showed no bite or aggression and that probably comes from lack of belief.

Still, not all lost. Provided that Mayo get the win in the Hyde, we will go into a winner takes all game on the final day. Win that, hopefully draw Monaghan and then we will be heading to Croker

Everybody singing from the same hymn sheet with the post s I've read. Lack of self believe from management, team and fans. Is there a sense of throwing in the towel against Mayo and Dublin and hoping for the best for the Roscommon game. Why didn'twe have a cut at Mayo as the Dubs will give us a good drubbing. Paddy Lynch injury is obviously the catalyst for doom and gloom instead of opportunity for others to step up to the plate.
Miracles needed now.

I can't understand why teams like Cavan go out against supposedly superior opponents like say Mayo on Saturday with the mindset of damage limitations.. what's the point..? you are going to loose for sure with that attitude so why no give the game a go..? We have 19/20 of a back room staff all getting paid expenses of one degree or other and this is the best they could come up with against a fairly limited Mayo team… Heaven help us !!!!

Replying To RHF:  "You are totally missing the point for some reason…. We didn't get one decent scoring forward ( apart from McKiernan who played midfield a good bit at U-21 ) out of all 4 wins because of the horrible negative football we were playing… Tyrone got very good forwards even though they lost a couple of Finals… Nobody is suggesting that your better failing repeatedly at under age level but it should be a stage for young players to express themselves and enjoy playing the game… not put in a straight jacket from day one at County level… A prominent Kerry GAA man told me a few years ago that none of their under age managers are put under any pressure to win silverware but they are expected to develop and encourage young players in the proper way to play the game and hopefully unearth a few that would go on to play at senior level…and if they do win something along the way it's a nice added bonus… I couldn't care less who was on that Dublin team that beat us but the way we set up to play that day was atrocious… Let young lads go out and play the game with enthusiasm and enjoyment and you never know what gem you might pick up… you certainly won't unearth any future stars by playing ultra defensive football at minor and U-20 level… By the way this is not just a Cavan thing but why follow others like sheep….!!!

We are not producing out and out forwards and it's nothing to do with what is happening at U20 level. There are several lads who are very good club forwards but don't have the cutting edge at county level whether it's a lack of aggression or slight lack of pace they have had several chances but haven't taken it.

Since 1997 the only forwards that i can think off that were consistent and guaranteed a few scores from play from the full forward line were;

Johnston
Jason Reilly
Larry Reilly
Mickey Graham

Others have come and gone like Keating, Dunne and Tomsmiths find Givney(more a midfielder) but were not consistent and drifted on and off the panel.

Hopefully Paddy Lynch will be back fully fit next year and continue on the trajectory that he has been on and Darragh Lovett can continue his development and a few younger lads come through as they will be needed."

As RHF has stated and I agree… the blame for our lack of forwards can't be left at the door of what's going on presently at U-20 level but it does go back to the absolute dire tatics used when we won 4 in a row Ulster U21 titles many years ago… All the above mentioned forwards came from a period where attacking football was encouraged and risks were allowed to be taken… Do you think the caviller approach of Larry Reilly or other attackers of that time would be tolerated now…? No chance… all attacking instincts would be coached out of them by ultra cautious no risk management set ups.. That's the reason we have no score getting forwards coming through… Just look at last Saturday… we took the field with just 3 recognised forwards, 2 of which didn't register a score and over 75 minutes of playing time we managed 4 points from play… pathetic
