Team Of The Year

How wonderful to see so many Cavan players make so many choices for team of the year. The 2 galligans must be odds on for all star awards. Longer odds on Faulkner, Brady and a few others. However, we can hardly expect more than two.

Great news and well deserved hope they get an all star give them a big incentive to go for a few more. Well done lads.

Hes the most deserving, no question. I do think they'll give it to Davy Byrne tho. Hopefully not.

I'd say they have the team picked already, that's why they took Galligan out of midfield. MaCarthy and Fenton will get those spots.

In the forwards you have Sweeney, O'Callaghan, Kilkenny, Galligan nailed on, with between O'Connor, Scully, Rock for the last 2.

Goalie is a certainty.

Faulkners lack of pace showed him up a few times against the dub's so that might stand against him. I thought Smith had a solid year and wing back, thought Jason McLoughlin was unlucky not to get a nomination. The defenders might be Byrne, Fitzsimons, McLoughlin, Durcan, McDaid with Faulkner, Fahy, Small looking for the last spot.

Raymond will get no.1. Thomas Galligan is no longer nailed on in the forwards. People presumed J McCarthy would be a wing back with Fenton and Galligan midfield.
Cillian O Connor is nailed on in FF line along with Sweeney Kilkenny Con Rock. Last spot between Scully and Galligan.
Brady now has good chance in half back line that McCarthy is in midfield. I think either him or Faulkner will get one too depending on what way they line out the backs.

Gearoid at midfield so?

Fenton and McCarthy by a country mile. Still think there would be 15 more deserving recipients had McCarthy been nominated at half back with Galligan MF and 6 other forwards.

Thomas Galligan is more deserving of an All Star than any other Cavan player and has to get one or no one will want one next year. The fact that David Clifford & Shane Walsh got nominated is the only worry there as there was no logic used in picking either of those two for what they did in the c'ship this year (or not).

Raymond then is the standout in his position and should also get one, and Faulkner the best player on the team and there are possibly less standout backs than forwards with their head up for All Stars so we might get a Third.

No one disgraced themselves against the Dubs or went backwards in the race for an award I don't think. Cavan Management was probably at fault for the underuse of Tomas Galligan as much as he was quitened by the Dubs. He should have been brought out more or it kicked in more. The exception to that Dubs rule then was probably Ciaran Brady & Martin Reilly who pushed themeselves into nomination contention with good performances against the Dubs, but the awards will be handed out for the biggest contributors to the Ulster success. I see Martin Reilly is in Donaghy's team but I think if we are only getting 3 at most then his Ulster performances don't put him in the running. I'd have Ciaran Brady as the unlucky loser and this would be my All Start Team assuming you have to pick players in the category they were nominated in:

1. Raymond Galligan (Cavan)

2. Oisin Mullin (Mayo)
3. Mick Fitzsimons (Dublin)
4. Padraig Faulkner (Cavan)

5. Davy Byrne (Dublin)
6. John Small (Dublin)
7. Paddy Durkan (Dublin)

8. James McCarthy (Dublin)
9. Brian Fenton (Dublin)

10. Niall Scully (Dublin)
11. Con O'Callaghan (Dublin)
12. Thomas Galligan (Cavan)

13. Conor Sweeney (Tipperary)
14. Ciaran Kilkenny (Dublin)
15. Cillian O'Connor (Mayo)

Davy Byrne is out of position but he and Fitzsimons are more deserving of All Stars than Murchan & McDaid for me, and both had to be fitted in based on a good All Ireland final performances rather than just getting a few scores against the Cannon fodder.

I think I agree with your team. Only possible exception Dean Rock in for Scully, but the annual cries from the Dublin fans and former players are for Scully this year so I think he'll get it.

Niall Scully deserves his place. Ciaran Brady best other from a Cavan perspective. Martin Reilly too similar a player to Scully. Our best over past few years but Dubs on another level and Scully probably one of their most consistent if unsung?

Think James McCarthy will be selected at Centre back, Thomas Galligan at midfield. Rock will be in the forwards, It will be between Faulkner and Byrne in the full back line

Unless they have changed the rules? There was previous players selected in positions where they weren't nominated. Colm Cavanagh at full back, when nominates at midfield. Brian Howard at centre back when nominated at half forward

Mostly for his performance in the first half of the AI final to be honest which I was very impressed with, plus a few other purple patches in other games. With the way the Dubs brushed everyone aside his first half performance deserves an All Star on it's own I think. He would have had Mayo alot closer if their forwards didn't spurn many of the other chances he created in that first half too.

He would definitely win the "Player who made the Dubs look beatable for about 10 minutes of the year Award" for me if there was one..

Ahead of Ciaran Brady an honourable 2nd.

And no one in 3rd. A sad and empty spot on the podium to reflect the dominace of Dublin.

Gerry Smith had a good Ulster championship but struggled v Dublin and caught in possession a few times.
