intermediate/junior Championship

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After the weekends action in the Intermediate Championship you would probably still have to stick with Ballyhaise to win it but I was very surprised to see them struggle to break down Belturbet, it was a wet evening and alot of off the ball stuff which would have definitely suited Belturbet more. I think with Padraig Moore back in the team for the replay Ballyhaise will see it thru. Shercock will go toe to toe with them in the final, I wouldn't just like to bank on Ballyhaise for definite.

In the Junior Championship, another great game between Kildallan & Knockbride. On another day Kildallan could have easily won but ya have to give credit to Knockbride, with their minors back in the side they see to be hitting some form and don't forget they also won the Reserve Championship not too long ago against Drumgoon which shows they have a decent panel. They will most certainly give Ballymachugh a good game this weekend and would not like to make a call on it. Of course you would imagine Ballymachugh to win but don't write off Knockbride for a second.

Drung were absolutely awful against Shannon Gaels from what I was told and over the 2 games against them they can have no complaints. This will be Shannon Gaels 4th or 5th Semi-Final in as many years if I am correct so they are no bad team. In saying that I can't see them turning over Drumalee this weekend, if Niall Walsh is playing they will keep it close but I expect Drumalee's experience to tell. Then again anything can happen in a Championship Semi-Final so don't rule out an upset!

It's all set up for a Ballymachugh v Drumalee final which would be a great game. But I have a sneaky feeling we will see an upset this weekend. Best of luck to all clubs.

WEte you at either junior game?? If so we're they any good? It's very hard to look past Ballymachugh to get to at least the final, knockbride have done very well and probably got further than most people would have thought and are punching high in the league too but just think Ballymachugh is a tough ask on them, it's also hard to see Shanon Gaels beating drumalee to be fair but then again we would of all said the they wouldnt of beaten drung, it's going to be a fascinating weekend of football and hopefully I'll get down to watch all the games this weekend.

I was at the Kildallan & Knockbride game in Butlersbridge last Saturday. I have to say it was an excellent and exciting game from start to finish, I didn't think it would of been as close as the first game betweem them but it was even better again. Absolutely nothing between the sides and Kildallan can count themselves very unlucky not to of won. A great showing for Junior football in the county. I still wouldn't rule out an upset in either Semi-Final this weekend, Knockbride have nothing to lose while all the pressure will be on Ballymachugh as will be the case on Sunday between Drumalee & Shannon Gaels.

So Ballyhaise play Shercock and Drumalee play Ballymachugh in next weeeknd's county finals.

I'm hearing it's a double header next Sunday in Breffni, with the Junior Championship Final at 2:15 and the Intermediate final at 4. Should be a great days action. Was anyone at the games over the weekend and who are peoples favorites for both games? In my opinion the Intermediate could be closer than we think but Ballyhaise's experience and better quality should see them win it. The Junior cChampionship Final is a toss of a coin, could go either way. May the best team win both games.

I like the league format for the championship and the draw every week but the relegation format makes no sense denn win two games finish 8th from bottom of table and end up relegated by a team who wouldn't bother fielding a team for one round of fixtures end up bottom with no points yet put in a big effort in one game and stay up crazy stuff, I think the should play 5 rounds instead of 4, the top 2 go into semi final 3,4,5 and 6th play quarter finals, bottom team relegated go by score average no play off's

Killeshandra should have been relegated automatically having not fielded for a championship game. That is unnaceptable

Was in the park today for both games.
Drumalee very luck to get past Shannon gaels, gaels much the better side for the first 40 mins or so even missing their best player in Aaron o hara. Drumalees experienced guys like dunne and gaffney grabbed game by scruff of the neck

Mackey is still the best player in the county by far. Pure class again today

It's a joke that Killeshandra stay up when they didn't play all the fixtures. Surely there must be some consequences for not fulfilling a fixture.

Shannon Gaels wasteful in attack. Nevin O Donnell would have been a help for them. They have lost a few good forwards in the last few years, Eamon Reilly,
PP O Hara, Enda McHugh.

The format of the league is questionable at best but how are Killeshandra at fault for surviving a tough year and fighting to the end with a panel of very limited numbers, You can only play what's put in front of you and as for the round that was unable to be played doesn't affect any other team but the team that were unable to field so how is it that a club should be punished for basically losing a game?

A club unable to fulfill a fixture receives a fine and a loss, how is not fielding a team any different than going out and losing a game, it affects only the team unable to field!

What a stupid statement. Of course it affected the Championship. The game that Killeshandra conceded was against Drumgoon, who then in turn finished 2nd against Laragh on 8 points. now for arguments sake if Killeshandra fielded a team that day and won, Drumgoon would of finished 3rd or 4th on 6 points and would of had to play someone else in the Quarter-Finals as would other clubs of played someone else and who knows what would of happened. Anyway, it's over with now I just hope that the County Board can learn from these incidents in the future.

So there we have it three teams (Bridge,Redhills & Killeshandra) who only only managed a point between them over 12 games in the league basis stay in intermediate, while the likes of Denn (who beat Ballyhaise) won as many games as Shercock and taking scoring difference into consideration would have finished seventh(Shercock ninth) and in the quarters ,are now relegated to junior. Does this seem fair? Why have a league basis when your fate is based on the result of a one off game? Is there an argument here for going back to a straight knockout tournament?

I agree 100%. While I feel the League basis in which the Championship is run has been a success, the Relegation format has to be looked at bigtime.

you can't have it every way. The league championship doesn't stop after 4 games..people would only be complaining then about lack of games, or teams giving up if they lose the first 2 or 3 games, and so, distorting results/positions. Drumlane, Denn & kilinkere have only themselves to blame. If Redhills, bridge & killeshandra were that bad, then they wouldn't have survived..or shouldn't have survived.

I was a fan of the format from the start and I think it has worked very well. I would like to see it continued. The only thing I was iffy about was the relegation playoffs and I think, particularly in Intermediate, a sour taste has been left.
A better way may have been at least one automatic relegation but probably two. Then only one playoff between 11th and 12th.

then you'd have people from the 11th place team giving out! The bottom 3 automatically going down could be the way to go. Teams wouldn't concede games then to save themselves for the relegation playoff's..

I have no gripe with killeshandra incredible what a difference losing a few players can make, from a senior semi final to a kick of a ball from playing junior football in 2 years, it's the format I have the issue with if it's a proper league then score difference comes in to it. here is a scenario you could have, a team struggling in the league a couple of top players go to the manager saying we have no hope in the championship and the want to go to America for summer, the manager says all right lads but I want you back for relegation playoff in September one big effort and we stay up, that's wrong, if arva had beaten gowna in the senior relegation playoff there may have been some hope that relegation format would be looked at,
even the main league is not a proper one a few years ago there were 3 teams tied on points in 2nd place in div 3, the format was that the team in first place got promoted 2nd and 3rd played off for 2nd promotion place, kildallon were a mile ahead of the other two on score difference, a three way playoff took place with the two top teams then to playoff for promotion, each team won one and lost one so the ended up tied again, incredibly then the geniuses in charge decided that score average would come in to play but based on the 2 playoff games each team had had played only, and kildallon missed out on this even though the had way better score over 11 games, it came down to score over 2 playoff games, the county board is safe enough the English premer league wont be headhunting any of the clowns that drew up this format.

How is it a joke, they didnt fulfil a fixture, lost the points, ended up in a relegation fight and survived!
