'Alchie' was one of a family of 11 children. His mother died at a young age while his father Lal ran a popular barbers shop in the town. He excelled at mechanical drawing and had the distinction of receiving a First in All Ireland award for his work. Alan was a key player for the local Rory O Moores club before emigrating to Canada in the mid-1960s.
