Meath coaches Joe McMahon and Martin Corey

Martin Corey and Joe McMahon have linked up with Down football kingpins Kilcoo just three weeks after their sudden departures from Meath manager Robbie Brennan’s backroom team.

Former Monaghan and Clontibret player Corey has been appointed manager in succession to Karl Lacey, while 2005 and ’08 Tyrone All-Ireland SFC winner McMahon will assist him along with Paddy Crozier, who managed his native Derry to an Allianz League Division 1 title in 2008. Crozier and McMahon previously worked together at Tyrone club Galbally.

It remains unclear if Corey and McMahon had agreed to join Kilcoo before leaving their coaching roles with Meath on the eve of their Leinster SFC campaign.

Donegal’s 2012 All-Ireland SFC winning centre back Lacey stepped down in January after Kilcoo lost the Ulster club SFC final to Errigal Ciarán. All-Ireland champions in 2022, the Magpies are seeking a seventh straight Down SFC title and have made a strong start to the new season by winning their first three League games against Saul, Ballyholland and Warrenpoint.
