This leaves room for four amalgamations to increase competition. It also balances out the Intermediate and Junior Championship so a stronger Cavan club will be going forward in Ulster, something we have underachieved at in recent years."
It is likely that this will only strengthen the quality of the club going to Ulster in the Intermediate and Junior grades Amalgamations in Senior will not be allowed go to Ulster.

I would also argue that amalgamations should not be allowed in our own junior championship. So only intermediate winners would benefit.

There are 3 teams going from Senior to Intermediate for 2017 and 2018 and 3 teams going from Intermediate to Junior for 2017 and 2018 I can see that this should make the Junior and Intermediate Champions stronger and therefore more competitive in Ulster Club, but how will this strengthen the Senior championship?

It will get rid of the weaker teams. Therefore in theory what games there are should be of a higher standard and quality will improve. In theory on paper.

I expect the clubs to appeal this decision.

These games will definitely go ahead. What's everyone's predictions to go down? It's so difficult to predict as clubs have probably barely trained recently and fitness levels will be low you would imagine. But you would think Denn, Ballyhaise and Killeshandra will go down from Senior, along with Templeport, Drung and Drumalee. But then again anyone could go especially in Intermediate!

There's only one club in contention for Senior. Would be absolutely shocked if the Gaels went down.

Clubs should suck it up and get on with it. Really negative attitude in Cavan clubs (of which there are about 5 too many). Protect what you have at all costs in the boardroom if you cannot do it on the field.

Having played for a club that was at the bottom of a championship for years that was then relegated before being promoted I can say that being relegated can be a very positive thing. It took being relegated for me to see that.

Chairmen may not agree but if you ask players they will generally want to play at a level where they can win.

Short term pain for long term benefit.

Having said that it would be annoying if you had only just been promoted from Junior or Senior and you got relegated this year i.e. Killeshandra or Templeport. You can't make an omelette without breaking a few eggs though!

True Armin. It's always preferable to play at your highest level possible but it's detrimental if you're out of your league. It's better for clubs to be competitive and especially for the long term development of younger players. If there's the carrot of a genuine crack at a county championship then it helps stoke the fire in players and keep them interested. It's also better for the club long term and great for the younger fans. When you get to a county final it creates a great buzz and atmosphere around a parish and the day itself is a great occasion for a club. Youngsters running around Breffni don't care if it's Senior, Intermediate or Junior. Their team is in the county final in Breffni. That's all that matters and those sort of occasions live long in the memory.
It's tough for teams dropping down but them's the breaks. There's little to nothing between the top junior or lower intermediate teams and top intermediate or lower senior teams. Bad luck, emigration or injury can be a huge deciding factor from one year to the next but as you said yourself if you want to make and omelette. It's tough on the likes of Killeshandra but they lost two massive players recently through work and a couple more over the last year or two. Unfortunately without these players they are no where near senior and that's the reality. No point flogging a dead horse.

So relegation has started anyway. That Denn defeat scoreline was massive. I'd imagine Gaels will beat Ballyhaise to stay up. Drumalee go e senior to junior very quickly.

the scorelines from the two senior relegation games yesterday were more like u13 scorelines than adult football. 9-17 v 0-09, and 5-14 v 3-11.

Bad times for Drumalee GAA after working hard to gain promotion to Division 2 of the ACFL next season they go and get relegated to the Junior Championship. I did back them to go down the other day but as a town based team that shouldn't really be happening. You would expect them to come back up next season to Intermediate level as playing in Division 2 should only benefit them. But then again, you can't guarantee anything!
