New Additions To The Cavan Panel

Replying To PatTheDandy:  "I could be wrong, but I believe form is an old, old wooden ship that was used during the Civil War era.

McKiernan was ineffective for a full half in his last game of club football by an out of position full back who retired from County football about 4 years ago because of his age.

Good against Ramor though."
I don't think referees And umpires would allow a player to be targeted and taken out of a game like that at county level.

I am hearing this evening that McKiernan has stepped away from the Cavan panel for 2020 citing lack of protection in the Kingscourt game from the Referee, and by extension, the County Board.

Any truth in that?

If he has he is foolish because he hasn't many seasons left he would want to be making the most of them.

Sarcasm is lost on some people...I heard it was a rumour started by the gaels as deflection on their disastrous performance

Does the lack of noise/buzz around the camp worry anyone else.I for one am very shocked there hasn't been some news. Was talking to a friend and he claims that fergal Reilly is absolutely finished with Cavan, this would be a blow as we are weak for corner back options.Hard to argue with the lad gave up so much of his life and wasn't even starting at some points

If he wasn't starting, it wouldn't be a major blow..

Maybe there are one or two other external factors killing the championship buzz.
Not much coming from the neighbours either except a few reports of injury worries to big names. No surprise there.

Anyway, silence is a good thing. Heads down, no talk then beat them out the gate.

Fergal like many before him was on the Cavan panel eventually got starting in the league (NFL Div1) games and then seen zero championship minutes not even getting on as a substitute. Now consider any player in that position and there have been many in Cavan over the years why would you commit to the training and the panel when you know the setup will not consider you for Ulster SFC

Who would you have dropped for him last year? Our full back line was probably our best line all championship.

With Moynagh away this year, would he not back himself to push for a starting place?

As far as I know Fergal left the Cavan Senior panel a number of years ago at the end of a season and did not rejoin. I heard rumours that Fergal along with other Castlerahan players were invited to join the panel but have no interest that's their business. Why they have no interest I don't know my presumption would be that it's based on their own personal experience. Asking why someone is quitting a panel they are not part of is strange as to the question of who I would drop to bring Fergal in a game where a panel is required name the 12 defenders in Cavan more capable.

I had a very interesting chat with a former Cavan player in Casement Park quite some time ago. He had hung up his boots at that stage and he noted that while it was very hard to get on the Cavan Panel and Team it was even harder to get off it.

Now think about that for a minute.

There are many reasons why players are not interested the best corner forward in the County (Shane Tierney from Lavey) has not been in to a panel as far as I know , don't know why but sure he has his reason's

For what it's worth, of those that I have seen playing for Cavan in the last 5 years, I can only think of three natural man marking corner backs/full line players that I would consider better than Fergal Reilly.

Padraig Faulkner
Jason McLoughlin
Killian Clarke

Paddy Meade looks a future nailed on county starter for Kingscourt and may have more county potential than Fergal in the long term but most of that was at CB and at club level, so I would still rank Fergal at 3rd this year in the absence of Killian Clarke, perhaps 2nd if Faulkner is deployed elsewhere.

In summary, he should be getting a run.

You mustn't have seen Danny Cusack play yet.
I'd also wonder why, if Fergal Reilly is one of the top five man markers in the county, that Castlerahan usually put Enda O'Connell marking the opposition's best player?
I laugh at all these connotations people come up with about lads that should be included. It's not just about talent or ability folks. Players have to have the determination and willpower. Some players are happy just staring for their clubs and don't have the drive, or perhaps the time; to put into being an inter county footballer. It can't always be put back to management why such and such a lad isn't included.
We seem to be fixated in Cavan with who isn't on the panel rather than who is.

Replying To PatTheDandy:  "I think if you were to look at things on a pound for pound basis and pick the best player in the county in each position rather than just trying to accomodate players out of positions they are not comfortable in, the below would be Cavan's best team:

1 James Farrelly
2 Padraig Faulkner
3 Padraig Faulkner
4 Padraig Faulkner
5 Padraig Faulkner
6 Padraig Faulkner
7 Gerry Smith
8 Padraig Faulkner
9 James Smith
10 Padraig Faulkner
11 Martin Reilly or Padraig Faulkner
12 Padraig Faulkner/Gearoid McKiernan/Cormac O' Reilly
13 Niall McDermott
14 Padraig Faulkner
15 Shane Tierney"
