Cavan'S Mount Rushmore

(Oldest Posts First)

OTB AM have been running a segment for the last few weeks whereby they try and select the sporting Mt Rushmore for each county (i.e 4 individuals who deserve to be immortalised in sculpture for their achievements)

The criteria hasn't really been specified but it has led to healthy debate, especially in counties like Cork with such an array of talent. They generally bring on 2 natives of each county to make the final selection. Our nefarious neighbours went with Tommy Bowe, Barry McGuigan, Jenny Greenan and finally Nudie Hughes who edged out Conor Mc.

I could spend forever here with suggestions and justifications but instead I am going to throw out my selection and let the debate ensue. John Joe O'Reilly, Charlie Gallagher, Catherina McKiernan and Paul Brady.

Brollyisanass..I agree with three of your selection, however I would change Charlie Gallagher with Jim Smith. Its a personnel choice , both of them were one of the best in the country in their day. Being our first all- Ireland winning captain, Jim just edges it for me. but thats just a personnel choice. I dont think we can dispute the other three.

I would go with Catherina Mc Kiernan, John Joe Reilly, Larry Reilly & Jason Reilly.

Paul Brady's achievements are huge but I think of you were to use the scale of people inspired to play the sport because of them, the other 4 definitely rank higher. Catherina McKiernan's on a national level.

Dermot McCabe is possibly a better footballer than the 3 footballers I have included, but much less adored by the fans, and therefore misses out on that basis.

I think McCabe would be judged as a footballer. Roy Keane is not for everyone but Irish and a United fans would judge him as one of their best players.

Well the panel came up with their 4. . .

Catherina McKiernan
Paul Brady
Mick Higgins
Leona McGuire

How John Joe was omitted is beyond me but it's always a matter of opinion in these kind of things I suppose.

John Joe should have been in instead of Leona for sure.

Turning professional at a sport doesn't trump John Joe's 3 all ireland medals for me. And if it did then Cillian Sheridan would have also be in there ahead of Mick Higgins.

Flawed logic and a bit of politics and equality at play there, and West Cavan having to get their spake in. But that's just my opinion on it.

Nothing against Leona Maguire who has had an excellent record as an amateur golfer but still has to establish herself long term. If I had to pick a golfer it would be Christy O'Connor Sr. So my picks as as follows: Jim Smith (who according to my father was the best footballer he ever saw) & who captioned Cavan to their first All Ireland; John Joe O'Reilly; Mick Higgins; Paul Brady.

Christy O'Connor Sr wasn't from cavan so not sure why you would pick him? Catherina mcKiernan has to be on it (4 world silver medals, 1 European gold, 3 marathon wins and national marathon record holder)

those you mention would not be known outside of Ireland or if they were it would be by followers of their own sport. On the other hand Athletes, golfers, boxers, showjumpers, soccer players, cyclists etc compete against the best in the world so are more deserving
