Will There Be Any Football Back This Year?

(Oldest Posts First)

Firstly, sincere condolensces to everyone involved in the Cornafean & Killinkere clubs also on the sad & tragic losses of two great young players in Shane Halton & Lewis Fay-Cooper.

Getting the football back is probably an insignificance thinking about those circumstances, but I was just wondering if anyone has any substanciated information (not speculation) on the chances of club football being played this year?

There seems to be talk of a return in the roadmap about returning if social distancing rules can be complied with. Maybe that is just for the crowd, and they know that it cant be complied with on the pitches, but that has not been made clear in my reading of the "roadmap". And obviously it cannot be complied with on the pitches.

In the Premier League and Bundiesliga, the potential returns also seemed to be based on heavy testing of players and keeping them away from their families etc., And getting tests done doesn't appear to be that freely available here that amateurs could get them done before every training or game even if they wanted to, nevermind be capable of isolating from their families for 6-8 weeks to run off a knockout c'ship.

It would be great for every parish's morale to get the football back, but I just understand how the government will allow 30 men onto field to run into each other, when you compare it to what they are askin the pubs to do to get back early, which appears to be that individuals or families are not allowed to get up from their table service only tables in case they go near someone who is not in their circle.

Does anyone know what players, clubs and the county board thoughts and plans are at the moment?

They wouldn't have plans all they can do is wait on Government advise.

As far as i can see government advise is that social distancing is here to stay until this virus isn't a threat any more by vaccine or whatever so that will mean no GAA activity for the foreseeable .

The Government were more just trying to give hope with the phasing, probably knowing themselves Sports like GAA won't be happening..
Pubs also, how realistically would people with drink on Board social distance.?

They have the Inter County return down for October when flu season will be happening again. A second wave of covid 19 will likely be then too, so no football this year. The Dutch League confirmed they won't have spectators until a Vaccine.

Probably not. But at least we have plenty of articles to read about failed Cavan players who are keen to tell us why they don't want to play for Cavan anymore.

no GAA this year. It's only a hobby. Plenty of things to do where hundreds won't be put at needless risk. Forget about it and start fresh next season. Why would anyone want to play in october and november when pitches are crap and every second game is cancelled due to weather and all the weddings that have been backlogged?

Starting fresh next season might seem ideal with the new set of fixtures. But ultimately with no Vaccine there might not be GAA for a good while
It's not a professions sport, where players are tested and are isolating.

They there might come a time where they might have to take a risk of playing, as no guarantee there will be a Vaccine in one year or more.

In Cavan I think that club football is scheduled to commence on W/E August 1st/3rd with the league, there will be another round of the league on w/e August 9th/10th and the Championship starts on W/E August, with the Senior Final on October 11th
The league will then recommence on October 17th/18/th.
All championships will be at quarter finals in mid September when Cavan are due back training, players on the county panel from 24 clubs left in the championship will be put in an extremly awkward position, their club needs them at training and Mickey Graham wants them who gets them?

As it is highly unlikely that Galway will be going to New York in October there will be 32 counties in the drawthis is a great
oppertunnity for the G.A.A. to run this year's Inter-County Championship on a knock out basis open draw you could have Tyrone v Dublin Cavan v Kerry Mayo v Meath Cork v Donegal Monaghan v Galway etc. etc 5 weeks to run it. Insteaed of having 4 provincial competitions with different numers competing in Leinster 11 Ulster 9 Connaught and Munster 6 each.

Any thoughts?

Congratulations to Cavan on being the 1st county to name the date of their Senior Championship Final.

I hope that all clubs will be issued with their fixtures within the next 2 weeks Date Time Venue etc. up until October 11th

There is no doubt that our fixtures have improved greatly over the last 10/15 years we have now 5 months of G.A.A. to look forward to if the November and December weather is good to us all the better.

I think just about every supporter would like the 32 team open draw, but I can't see it happening.

The provincial councils will insist on running off the provincial championships - the draw is already made. And they'll point at increased travel length and virus spread potential to stave off the open draw.

It may go back to the old format of the 4 provincial winners heading straight into All Ireland semi-finals, or possibly quarter finals like the minor championship with 4 provincial winners playing 4 provincial losers.

The only caveat to that is that they seem determined to run a 2nd tier championship, so if they do, then they need to run a qualifier system in the main championship for div 1 and 2 teams who don't make the provincial final.

I haven't heard anything about player safety in all of the talk about club and county football. All the GAA seem worried about is how many patrons they can get to pay at the gate.

Where are the guidelines for player safety? If fans have to stay 1 or 2 meters apart, how can players tackle each other while sweating and breathing heavily?
No mention of testing every player in the run up to contact training or games.
No guidlines about where subs and management will be on the sidelines (distance apart, face masks).
No guidelines about water bottle use - do clubs need seperate water bottles for each member of the squad, all stored apart from each other and the water carriers wiping each bottle and their hands after each use.
Professional sports have increased the number of subs allowed to help with player welfare but no mention of this for amateur players.

All the talk about fixtures and player welfare but now they expect players to play full club and county fixtures right up to the end of the year and then continue on playing the whole of 2021 starting in January again..

There is no relegation in the Cavan championships this year I presume that there is promotion for Intermediate and Junior winners??
Also I assume that there is neither promotion or relegation in the A.C.F.L. this year!!!

I don't know if that will be the case, I'd say there will be relegation after the 4 rounds of group stages.
I don't see the point in playing league games after the championship in October November December.
Don't think anyone would have the appetite for that

How so?? Shouldn't all these aspects be covered before asking amateur players to go back playing. They are more concerned about the patrons than the players. And now they've washed their hands of any responsibility by saying it's up to players to self diagnose..as if a player who has covid but well enough to play is gonna miss a championship match.
