Low key enough build up for the U20s. Playing Down tomorrow at 2. Down suppose to be decent. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2824 - 14/02/2020 16:23:17 2267709 Link 0 |
Match now today at 1. Looking forward to it. Conditions still a bit ropey. BreffniGuide (Cavan) - Posts: 474 - 22/02/2020 10:14:28 2268938 Link 0 |
Did Cavan v Down go ahead today ? Anyone at it ? facer4home (Cavan) - Posts: 159 - 22/02/2020 15:43:24 2269019 Link 0 |
Yeah. Conditions not ideal, very windy. Pretty poor stuff from Cavan though if we're honest, they looked like a team that had only met this morning at times. What you're really looking for from these u20s is 3 or 4 guys who seem ready to step up to the seniors in the next 12 months or so. In that regard, I thought Oisin Brady looked the part, some great turnovers and has the athleticism. Mannion from ramor can certainly move with the ball too. And cormac o Reilly kicked 3 super points. Some of the other much hyped names had days to forget. GallantJohnJoe (Cavan) - Posts: 329 - 22/02/2020 16:31:26 2269028 Link 1 |
I don't know these fixtures weren't played midweek, the way U21 use to be run on Wednesday nights. Probaly too much pressure for players travelling midweek from College, but by having the games at weekend the U20s are an after thought with the Seniors also playing. Time for a change in management team at this level. I dont think the best is being got from what we have. For a team with a lot of scoring potential that was a pathetic return. fredflint (Cavan) - Posts: 1485 - 24/02/2020 13:45:28 2269723 Link 0 |
Would agree with your only meeting up the morning of the game comments. Particularly in the forward department, we looked clueless in attack and depending on individuals to come up with something. Cormac O' Reilly angled points aside, the only other way to score seemed to be to get frees from running directly at crowded defences. Not a huge amount of standouts that you would say are definite Seniors in a few years. No. 4 Killian Brady is definitely on the small side but did everything right and looks a classy all round player. He and O' Reilly would be the two biggest hopes for me. No. 3 Peter Smith & 5. Philip Nulty also had a good games marking the two inside forwards. Most of the defence had done well up until the killer goal against what looked a decent Down forward line. The big men 8, 9 & 11 also look like good strong ball carriers and won a good few frees in the danger zone but were definitely 2nd best when it came to winning kickouts. Sack the manager? What an insightful and original comment. I heard the Sun are looking for reporters, you should send in your CV. Setantawatchl (Cavan) - Posts: 132 - 29/02/2020 17:41:16 2270895 Link 0 |
Hes not up to this level, it's been clear for years. But the way we dont "sack" managers in GAA. Thats like something The Sun would print.

The conduct the day of the postponed Down game was extraordinary. GallantJohnJoe (Cavan) - Posts: 329 - 14/03/2020 16:53:52 2273814 Link 0 |
Bringing up last years thread but very poor showing from the U20s tonight unfortunately. Their football was far too negative and lacklustre. Down broke at speed and played on the counter. Even when we won a turn over and had extra men on the break we were too pedestrian. I don't see why we are training all these athletes if we don't want to utilise the physical traits they are developing in our game plan. I said at the time when we won 4 Ulster U-21 titles in a row that Cavan would pay a heavy price because of the manner in which those successes were achieved… I went to the first two Finals but couldn't bring myself to watch that muck again… All our teams are now drowning in a complete negative form of playing the game and as a result have developed no potent forwards in the last 8/10 years… This is all down to negative thinking management that has blighted us for some time… Last year's heroic Ulster win I fear may be an oasis in a desert and might be more put down to the unforeseen year we all had rather than any sort of progress been made at county level…. the results and performances since seem to bare that out too… ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 3027 - 10/07/2021 13:07:49 2358266 Link 0 |
Cavan abandoned the defensive approach at u21/20 under a few different managers and got big hammering. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2824 - 10/07/2021 13:32:27 2358273 Link 0 |
That might be but winning u-21's mean absolutely nothing if it negates success at senior level… the point I was making was that we didn't produce any decent forwards from those teams because of the dreadful negative approach…. I would trade those 4 titles for 2/3 reliable forwards who could be trusted to land scores on a regular basis… Those teams produced none but then how could they….?

I don't think it negated success at Senior. Cavan went from Division 3 to 1 with a lot of those players. FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2824 - 10/07/2021 14:59:10 2358283 Link 0 |
