Castlerahan V Cavan Gaels

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Having been at the final Sunday i really expected Castlerahan to go all guns blazing for the win having lost the previous two finals but they didnt, they seemed drilled on sitting back and giving possesion to the gaels even when they were behind,, a real bad spectacle for County Final and the management have to take the blame for setting Castlerahan up for that.

Maybe if Mackey had scored the penalty Castlerahan might have pushed on but probably the Gaels would have won it anyway. Poor defensive tactics & far to much lateral passing. Johnston best player on the pitch which at 33 & his best days behind him must be extremely worrying for mcgleenan."
I agree with you but in a county final theres no room for maybe, ifs and buts its all about leaving it out on the pitch and Castlrahan didnt do that and never deserved to win

It was brutal stuff. Very little free flowing football. Pulling , dragging, digs and overall very poor fair.
If Johnston gets man of the match and is still classed as the best forward in the county then we are in bigger trouble than i thought.
I'd say Mattie Gleenan was in the stand questioning his decision."

There are some lovely forwards and midfielders out there if they will come in. They don't have to come from the teams that played last Sunday. Sheridan from Arva has to be considered and McGlade from the same club in midfield. Ballymachue have some nice players if they would commit to the discipline that's required from a county player. Don't shut the door on fresh blood from all levels. I am sure the new manager will surely bring in new blood. I am sure he does not want to collect his P45 yet. Paul O'Corror knows how to score but he is so injury prone Niall and Steven Murray are also injury prone as are Jack Brady James McEnroe along with McKiernan and Johnston when you start counting the injury prone players all of a sudden we become a limited county team. So please god if the strength and conditioning is done right followed by match practice without this lateral crap we might do okay in division 2. Should the Gaels get a good run we could be without these players right up to next March. Same applies to the juniors and intermediate players that the management may have noticed that could get a run we don't know but anything is possible.

I think its a case of how bad of forwards we have rather than how good he is

I'd say dara mcaveety is a better forward than Johnston at the minute, same with Mackey, and a few others like c reilly from butlersbridge, ado cole. Just because they were not on winning team last Sunday doesn't make them worse, regardless of quality of match Sunday lots of good players in the county, last years drawn final was a great game didn't do the county any better.

Mackey missed a penalty scored 1point from a free. Regardless of whether he was on the winning team or not he's not a better scoring forward than Johnston .neither is mcvitty .
They are totally different type of players than Johnston .
The next best scoring forward to Johnston Is Dunne .

Ok for club, far too easily marked out of it at county level, mcaveety in full forward line would do far more damage than either of them.

Big difference between club and county football.
Big difference between hard and soft ground, spring and summer football.
Not everything is like for like. We can't afford to be dismissing forwards but I'd be very worried if Dunne and Johnson were carrying the flag for the county team. They're undoubtedly very talented but they've had plenty of chances at county level and it would be a bit of a stretch to call them the standout forwards in Cavan based on county team performances, no offence.

Yes of course I just mentioned a few names and could have kept naming players I just said we are not restricted to quality players BUT it's getting them into the county set up many just don't want to commit. You mentioned Cole he would not come in last year so will he have a change of heart I think Bradly is a Ramor lad as well as is James Brady. Plenty out there but they are putting their education their own personal future ahead of the county and rightly so so you don't get paid by the GAA.

I'm talking about scoring forwards.
Forwards who kick the ball over the bar when they get it.
And Dunne and Johnston are both tops at that.
Yes there a good ball carriers like Mackey and McVitty but they are not scoring forwards.

Bar frees they've hardly been prolific for Cavan. McKiernan probably our best score getter from play based on last few years. Givney much more effective team wise to us as a forward. McDermott would have been on a par with them if not better score wise for us. Mackey and McVeety much more effective overall too. Johnson very effective in the league. Championship he's been disappointing. Dunne will play if he's let. Will do the spectacular but sloppy with the basics. A good defender nullifies him a bit too easily.

They play two vastly different types of football Makey is a roamer Johnstston is a natural corner forward supply and demand for him Mackety works hard for what he gets Thats taking nothing away from Johnston he is cute gets handy frees and also can score with both feet but his inter county career is coming to an end as is Mackeys AGE

For me Mackey is a better all round footballer. Hes at his best in a wing forward role, where he can see where everything is. His kick passing is top notch and makes things happen, can take a score, can carry the ball, and rarely gets turned over. Watching Cavan last year, I felt at times he was wasted, as he was covering the likes of Killian Clarke going forward when it should have been the other way round.

Johnston is a corner forward, whos first instinct is to shoot, whether that be the right or wrong decision to make. Ive seen him play well for Cavan (eg the game against Wicklow where he single handedly won the game for 13 men v 15) , but he has also had some shockers

Castlerahan missed a trick by not bringing him out from FF where he was double and triple marked when he got the ball

Is it not a huge no no for a referee to be out after the two teams at start of second half?

Agree. was strange given how niggly the first half was that the referee, umpires & 2 experienced linesmen were last out on the pitch. The row had started by the time they had finished their ham sandwiches & lattes

A lot of lads missing the point, Seanie is 33 and has 10 Senior Championship medals in his pocket, how many times did he get man of the match in County Finals? He was pivotal in Cavan's promotion to Division One.
Seanie should be applauded for what he's achieved down the years and the fact that he keeps getting picked on the County Team at the age of 33 speaks volumes about his quality, but also speaks volumes about the lack of other scoring forwards.

Agree 100%
We didn't get even 1 natural scoring forward make it at senior level from 4 winning u21 sides because they have been programmed to play as robots.
Jack Brady yes probably does look like a good natural scoring forward.
What stands to Seanie even at 33 is his natural ability where he can kick off both feet plus his reading of the game and off the ball movement which is top class .
Yes he might not have 70 minutes at county level in him nowadays but he's a must for the panel at least.

Anyone that thought Mackey had a poor game should of went to kilenkere the night before the final where Mackey put on a faultless performance in bailieboro a lypsync battle as ginger spice!
Now that's a lad that deserves a medal!
