Slaughtneil capture 20th Derry SHC crown

Slaughtneil triumphed to their 14th consecutive Derry senior football championship title this afternoon with a 0-20 to 1-14 win over Kevin Lynch’s in Owenbeg.

Brendan Rogers, Cormac O’Doherty and Conor Doyle helped the holders to open up a 0-8 to 0-3 lead on the 23-time champions after the opening quarter of an hour of this decider.

Kevin Lynch’s cut their deficit to three ahead of Rogers being red-carded in the 25th minute and the score between the sides would stand at 0-11 to 0-8 come the half-time whistle.

Points by Shea Cassidy, Se McGuigan and Shane McGuigan got the defending champions motoring again early on in the second-half.

Kevin Lynch’s kept within touching distance prior to Jerome McGuigan and Shane McGuigan seeing back-to-back points followed up with PJ Glover’s score which put six between the teams late on.

Injury-time would see Slaughtneil conceding the game’s only goal before going on to record the three-point win which moves them up to 20 Derry SHC title, leaving them now three behind their Dungiven counterparts on the roll of honour list in the Oak Leaf County.
