Midleton got their Cork Premier senior hurling championship campaign up and running at the first attempt on Friday evening with a 0-25 to 0-17 win against St Finbarr’s.

Rebels star Conor Lehane led the way for the Magpies with 0-9 over the hour at Páirc Uí Rinn, as they avenged last month’s league final loss to the Barrs.

Having led by 0-13 to 0-9 at the end of the first-half, Midleton stretched their advantage after the change of ends with more points from Lehane and Mikey Finn.

Ben Cunningham pulled back scores for the 2022 champions, but it was last year’s beaten finalists that pushed their lead out to nine before winning by eight in the end.

Meanwhile, a late push from Newtownshandrum saw them earning a 2-16 to 0-22 draw with Douglas in Ballyhooly.

Jamie Coughlan’s early goal had marked the perfect start for Newtownshandrum bit, with Shane Kingston to the fore for them, it was Douglas that took in a 0-12 to 1-8 lead at the break.

That advantage would be moved out to seven after the change of ends before a Ronan Geary goal brought Newtownshandrum right back into it and, after drawing level, they’d fall behind a again to a Kingston point before Coughlan, who finished with 1-12 to his name, nailed a pressure free at the death.
