Goals key if Galway are to upset Limerick, says Cusack

Former Cork goalkeeper Dónal Óg Cusack feels Galway will need goals “to sustain them” against Limerick in Sunday’s All-Ireland senior hurling championship final.

The Tribesmen netted twice against Cork in their semi-final victory two weeks ago, and four times when they defeated Dublin last month to claim their first Leinster title in eight years

Writing in his ‘Hurling Nation’ column for RTE Sport ahead of Sunday’s final, Cusack feels that Micheál Donoghue’s side will need to exploit the cracks within Limerick which have been exposed on their own route to the Liam MacCarthy Cup decider.

“The Munster final against Cork went to the wire. Then came the All-Ireland semi-final. The cracks were there,” wrote the three-time All-Ireland winner.

“Clare simply couldn't exploit them. Galway need to float like butterflies and sting like bees. They need goals to sustain them.

“They've (Galway) conceded 14 goals along the way to this final, a lot given the way they set themselves up. Lockdown will have to be tougher. We hope Galway hurl without inhibition. Their best moments come when they play with freedom and joy.

“The defeats of the last two years have hurt the Treaty, and they've stayed together for this opportunity.

“Cian Lynch as a starter gives them a creativity and a vision they lacked against Clare.

“Ag deireadh an lae, it's not impossible, but Hurling Nation finds it difficult to see Limerick losing this one.”
