Clare star Shane O’Donnell has confirmed that he will retire from inter-county hurling at the end of the season.
The two-time All-Ireland winner and 2024 Hurler of the Year is currently immersed in Clare’s preparation for Sunday’s showdown with Limerick at Croke Park (4pm), where a place in this year’s Liam MacCarthy Cup decider will be up for grabs.
Speaking at the launch of new Irish sports nutrition brand Cróga at Croke Park, he said that he will be calling time on his inter-county career once the Banner men’s 2026 campaign concludes.
“This year will be the last time to play with Clare, so I’m looking to go out on a high,” the Éire Óg Ennis clubman is quoted saying by RTE Sport.
With the Treaty men having comfortably defeated Brian Lohan’s men in the Munster championship in May, O’Donnell says that Clare will be looking for a marked improvement against the Munster champions this weekend.
"We would have been disappointed earlier in the year with our performance against Limerick so we would have taken any opportunity to get to play them again," he added.
"To be able to do it in Croke Park is just brilliant, so I'm looking forward to the day. It is a real opportunity.
"Every chance we get to come up here is a privilege because in the week building up to the game, in training, you realise that these are the best days to put on a Clare jersey. I enjoy it a lot more now. In my younger days there was a lot more fear coming into it but now that I'm coming up to the last game or two that I'll play here, you can take it in a little bit more.
