Eight-time All-Ireland winner Philly McMahon says Dublin’s leaders have helped to bring on younger members of the squad.

Ger Brennan’s side upset Donegal with a 1-26 to 1-22 extra time victory at Croke Park last Sunday to progress into the All-Ireland SFC quarter-finals where they face Galway this Sunday at HQ (4pm).

Speaking on the Indo Sport GAA podcast this week, McMahon says the veterans have led by example and the younger players are following.

“I've always said once you get those leaders stepping up, the players we've spoken about so much, Con (O’Callaghan), (Ciaran) Kilkenny, (Brian) Howard, (Niall) Scully, all of these boys,” said the Ballymun Kickhams clubman.

“Davy Byrne at the back was really good and solid.

“You get them boys stepping up, the younger lads just jump on board and they did.”

On the potential of this current squad in the capital, the Dubs defender added: “For me it's the energy that the group has. And do you know what excites me? I think there's more in them. I think there's a little bit more to add into the quality of them in terms of shot execution, a few little turnovers.”
