The first senior county final of the year was played at UPMC Nowlan Park last Saturday evening when Mullinavat defeated local rivals Tullogher-Rosbercon to be crowned Kilkenny football champions.

Mullinavat’s 1-15 to 0-11 victory secured their eighth Kilkenny SFC title in 10 seasons and their ninth in all as the focus on Noreside now switches to hurling for the remainder of the year. With Donnacha O’Connor to the fore and former county hurling star Walter Walsh in their line-up, Tullogher-Rosbercon led by 0-6 to 0-4 after 19 minutes, but points from Ian Duggan, Oisín Knox and Padraic Dempsey restored parity at 0-7 apiece for the Vegas boys at the break.

The momentum remained with the winners after the restart when points from goalkeeper Jack Walsh (two-point free), Michael Malone, Duggan and Knox were followed by the only goal from Brian Phelan. That made it 1-12 to 0-7 before the three-quarter hour mark and the result was never in doubt after that.

Mullinavat now have a long wait to the start of the Leinster club IFC in the autumn.
