Cork’s Munster and All-Ireland SHC hopes have suffered a massive double blow with the news that Ciaran Joyce has been ruled out for the rest of the season and Rob Downey will be sidelined for six weeks.

Joyce, who was relocated to full back this season, was forced off with a knee injury after only five minutes of last Sunday’s Munster SHC Round 2 victory over 14-man Limerick. His and Cork’s worst fears were realised yesterday when a scan confirmed that he had sustained an ACL injury.

To compound matters, centre back Rob Downey will miss the remainder of the Munster SHC campaign with an ankle injury he suffered in the closing stages of the win at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

The injuries leave manager Ben O’Connor needing a new defensive spine ahead of the Rebels’ next Munster SHC outing against Waterford in Walsh Park on Saturday week, May 9.
