A late point from Donal Burke denied Offaly an opening win over Dublin in the Leinster senior hurling championship as it finished 4-22 to 2-28 in Tullamore this evening.

Points from Darragh Power and Burke (free) had helped the visitors to edge a 1-18 to 2-13 lead at half-time and Conor Donohoe would rattle the net for them two minutes into the restart.

Offaly responded with goals from Adam Screeney and Charlie Mitchell, along with two Screeney points (one free), which had the Faithful County back ahead with 20 minutes remaining before Dublin levelled and went into the lead again.

Screeney helped the hosts go back up by two prior to Conor Burke and Dara Purcell raising white flags that squared the sides with three minutes left in normal time.

Mitchell sent over the next scores for Offaly before a Donal Burke free erased it and the same player would cancel out Screeney’s free in injury-time to ensure the points were shared in this cracking provincial opener.

Meanwhile, Wexford recorded a 1-22 to 1-14 victory over Kildare in Newbridge to get themselves up and running in the Bob O’Keeffe Cup race.

Having run up an early 0-4 to 0-1 lead against the hosts, Keith Rossiter’s side would see their advantage disappear once Jack Sheridan hit their net on the half-hour mark and it took points from Conor Hearne and Jack O’Connor for the Slaneysiders to go in level at the break (0-9 to 1-6).

The second-half saw a marked improvement from the Model men with Lee Chin very much to the fore for them, as their talisman registered 1-12 in all including a late goal to put a seal on the win.
