Strong finish pleases O'Connor

Jack O'Connor feels Kerry have scope for improvement, despite overcoming old rivals Dublin by six points at Croke Park on Saturday night.

The All-Ireland champions surrendered a big second half lead against Galway the previous weekend in Tralee and their supporters were fearing a repeat when an unanswered 1-2 from the Dubs down the home stretch reduced the gap to just two points. But Kerry were able to see it this time thanks to late scores from Dingle All-Ireland club winner Tom O'Sullivan and Sean O'Shea.

“The very first thing we wanted was to try to win the game. Just try to get a performance, a more level performance," the Kingdom boss told the media afterwards.

“Because last weekend against Galway, halfway through the second half we were 12 points up and we finished up being lucky not to lose the game.

“And something similar happened towards the end of this game. We conceded a goal and a two-pointer to bring it back to two points. In fairness, I didn’t think it was a three-point game at that stage. But thankfully we finished stronger and won it by five or six.

“So plenty of room for improvement. But it’s great to win a game up here and know that you have a lot of areas where you can improve.”
