Kilcormac-Killoughey were made battle to the end by Birr to earn a 0-24 to 1-20 victory in Tullamore this evening and advance to their fourth consecutive Offaly senior hurling championship final.

Charlie Mitchell’s point at the death proved the difference between the sides as Birr were denied a first Sean Robbins Cup decider berth since 2019.

The scores of Joe Ryan and Colm Mulrooney had helped Birr get out to an early 0-5 to 0-2 lead and, while the holders would get it level by the 20th minute on 0-7 apiece, Ailbe Watkins’ goal a minute later surged Birr back in front.

Kilcormac-Killoughey hit back with a couple of points before Eoghan Cahill’s scores helped his side to hold a 1-9 to 0-11 advantage at the half.

Cahill (free) would put three between the teams again midway through the second-half prior to Daniel Hand, Mitchell and Adam Screeney raising consecutive white flags.

Screeney shot K/K in front in the 49th minute and Jack Screeney would double their lead ahead of Birr getting level again through Cahill and Adam Screeney and Luke Nolan exchanging points down the home stretch.

Jack Screeney and Mitchell nudged the defending champions two in front, but they’d need the latter to land their winner in the fifth minute of added time after Watkins and Cahill (free) had squared things up again for Birr.

Kilcormac-Killoughey now get set for another county final where they’ll face the winners of tomorrow’s other SHC semi-final between Shinrone and Belmont (4.30pm).
