Former Westmeath hurling manager Shane O’Brien has returned as head coach for 2025.

O’Brien, who led the Lake County to Joe McDonagh Cup success in 2021, managed the Dublin U20s this year and was also part of the senior management headed up by Micheál Donoghue, who has since reprised his role as Galway manager. The Dubliner has been recruited by new manager Seoirse Bulfin whose backroom team also includes defensive coach David O’Reilly, forwards’ coach Fergal Lynch, strength and conditioning coach Michael Frawley and goalkeeping coach David Bulfin, who is the manager’s brother.

News of O’Brien’s return was confirmed last Sunday, but was overshadowed by the decision by former All-Ireland SHC final referee Barry Kelly to abandon the Westmeath SHC final between Lough Lene Gaels and Castletown-Geoghegan after only 13 minutes due to adverse weather conditions.
