Scotstown are Monaghan senior football champions for the eight time in 10 years after seeing off Clontibret by 1-10 to 0-8 in Clones this afternoon.

Jack McCarron’s goal nine minutes into the second-half helped propel the holders to their 23rd SFC success, as Clontibret were left to rue their missed chances in the end.

McCarron’s free on the half-hour mark was what saw Scotstown take in a 0-5 to 0-4 lead at the interval, and he and county colleague Conor McManus would swap points early in the second-half.

Then came the key moment in this decider that saw Scotstown turnover their opponents in their own half and McCarron was able to send the ball into an empty net from some 30 metres out.

The game would have 13 scoreless minutes after that and, despite the trailers sending over points via McManus (2) and sub Dessie Mone, the scores of Jack McDevitt, Rory Beggan and Shane Carey ensured the Scotstown would be taking home the Mick Duffy Cup once more.
