Former Mayo star Lee Keegan described former team-mate Aidan O’Shea as “a huge focal point” in the Westerners’ victory over Kerry in Killarney yesterday.

Kevin McStay’s men started the All-Ireland senior football championship round robin series with bang by handing the defending champions a 1-19 to 0-17 defeat on their own turf, marking a first home championship loss for the Kingdom in 28 years.

Speaking on The Saturday Game afterwards, Keegan was delighted to see O’Shea getting plenty of ammunition against the Munster champions yesterday.

"They’re actually kicking him the ball," said the Westport man. "He’s been crying out for ball for years and we persisted with a running game for years. A better quality of ball.

"Today was different to Roscommon. He had the reverse role against Roscommon, where he didn’t get that kind of ball because of the packed defence. But today was wide open spaces for him and he was a huge focal point for Mayo today in everything they did well in attack.

"Also, you see him defend, tracking back to defence and working his way back. You put that in contrast then with the absolute magnificent David Clifford, who carried Kerry at times today as well."
