The British government is expected to make a decision on funding for the redevelopment of Casement Park in the coming days.
RTÉ is reporting that a final funding programme for the much-delayed project must be confirmed before September 16 in order to meet timelines for hosting Euro 2028. It’s understood that the matter was discussed by An Taoiseach Simon Harris and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer during their meeting at Farmleigh House in Dublin last weekend.
In June, GAA president Jarlath Burns admitted that hopes were fading for the stadium – which remains in a state of ruin – being ready in time for the Euros. So far, the NI Executive has committed £62.5m, the Irish Government £43m and the GAA has pledged £15m to the project which is expected to cost £300m to complete.
