Westmeath secured their first win in this year’s Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Group B campaign by handing Antrim a 2-18 to 1-15 defeat in Mullingar this afternoon.
Joe Fortune’s men were led in the scoring stakes by David Williams, who struck for 0-8 over the 70 minutes, while Eoin Keyes’s goal helped them towards a 1-12 to 1-8 lead at the halfway stage.
The hosts had led by 0-6 to 0-5 when a long-range effort from Keyes ended up in the Saffrons’ net, but Darren Gleeson’s charges would respond immediately via Niall McKenna blasting to the net at the other end.
Peter Clarke and Killian Doyle were introduced to the fray for the second-half and the former contributed a point two minutes into the restart ahead of Williams and Doyle each raising white flags.
Antrim would get their deficit down to three thanks to points from Conal Cunning (free) and Niall O’Connor, but Davy Glennon’s goal on the hour would all but ensure the crucial win for the Lake men and provide a real dent to their opponents' safety hopes.
