Westmeath stayed on course in the race for promotion from Division 3 of the Allianz Football League this afternoon thanks to a 0-14 to 1-8 win over Limerick in Mullingar.

Dessie Dolan’s men had led by the odd point in 13 at the end of a scrappy first-half and after the resumption they shot over three unanswered via Nigel Harte, sub Kieran Martin and Danny McCartan (free).

Limerick reduced their arrears but a brace of points from Ronan O’Toole kept the hosts in control and, even with the concession of a Cathal Downes goal in injury-time, the Lake men would win out by three.

Clare continued their own promotion push with a comfortable 2-15 to 0-8 victory against Wicklow in Ennis.

Cormac Murray fired in two goals for the Banner men before half-time and, as it proved, there’d be no coming back for the visitors from there.

In Markievicz Park, Niall Murphy starred for Sligo with 0-8 as they saw off Antrim by 1-20 to 1-13.

An entertaining first-half saw the visitors edging a 1-9 to 1-8 lead when the sides went in, but the Yeats men found another gear after the changes of ends and captain Murphy, Luke Towey and Lee Deignan provided the scores to help move them on to six points in the table.
