Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Notes

Under-15 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 7-12 St Loman's 2-13

Mullingar Shamrocks’ Under-15 squad earned two  points on Bank Holiday Monday in Lakepoint Park with a hard earned win over the home side.

This was a very enjoyable match for the  good sized attendance with Callum Rigney, Adam Glynn, John Ryan, Ryan Kelly and Gavin Pierce to the fore for Shamrocks while Oisin O’ Hara, Seanie Bracken, Byron Graham, Harry Mannering, David Geoghegan and Mark Tunney excelled for the home side. St. Loman’s were also missing influential players in Daniel McCann and Riley Sheahan. The Shamrocks’ squad was as follows: John Shaw, Callum Rigney, Eoin Doran, Gavin Pierce, Gary Brannigan, Mo Mohammed, Shane Ormsby, Adam Glynn, Donncha Maguire, Peter Finch, Tadgh Sheridan, Alex Sheerin, William O’ Reilly, Luke McCabe, Ryan Kelly, Stephen Battle, Hugh O’ Sullivan Sexton, John Ryan, Killian Kelly, Nathan Cornally, Matthew Shaw, Dylan Carey, Conor Heffernan and Phelim Creighton. Best wishes to Matthew Shaw who suffered an injury last week. Matthew is a key member of our under 15 squad.

Junior Football Championship: Athlone 0-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-6

Athlone powered by the experienced quartet of Andrew Lynam, Fergal Murray, Darren Magee and Emmet Collins were worthy winners of this junior football championship tie played in Ballymore on Monday. Athlone held an interval lead of 0-7 to 0-3 thanks mainly to some fine scores kicked by Costello and some bad misses by the Mullingar Shamrocks forwards. Ross Corroon, Zach Aherne and Trevor Keena kicked the Shamrocks points.

After the interval the teams shared four points with Ross Corroon  responsible for the Shamrocks points. Ross with perceptive passes created two great goal scoring opportunities at this early stage of the half but great saves from Cathal Joyce on both occasions denied Shamrocks the scores that might have made the difference. Athlone were comfortable for the remainder of the half and led by 0-13 to 0-6 as the game entered the final stages. Finally a snap shot from Zach Aherne zipped past Joyce but it was too little too late; Athlone added a final point to secure the championship points in what was a disappointing weekend for Mullingar Shamrocks in adult championship football.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Seán Hynes; Daniel  Chukwuemeka (Mark Flynn), Matthew Siode, Emmet Walsh; Davy Coyne, Nathan Smith, Ryan Blundell; Pearse Corroon, Dillon Matthews (Alan Cashman); Zach Aherne (1-1), Kenneth O'Reilly, John O'Reilly (Andrew Shaw), Trevor Keena (0-1), Ciarán Curley (Gary Corroon), Ross Corroon (0-4).

Senior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-6 Coralstown-Kinnegad 1-11

It's not possible to dress this one up with any type of spin as Mullingar Shamrocks were outplayed by a younger, fitter and more determined Coralstown-Kinnegad team in this first round senior championship match.

The Mullingar Shamrocks patient approach with plenty of lateral and back passes involved allowed Coralstown-Kinnegad plenty of time to defend in depth, turnovers were frequent and in turn Coralstown-Kinnegad delivered fast ball to their forwards which stretched the Shamrocks defence to near breaking point. After Shamrocks failed to register in a  few early attacks Coralstown-Kinnegad responded with three points from Jack Torpey, Ger Leech and a great effort from midfielder Eoin O'Brien in the first ten minutes. In between Coralstown-Kinnegad goalkeeper Seán Martin saved well from Killian Butler who was Mullingar Shamrocks best forward on the night.

Denis Corroon pointed from a free to open the Shamrocks scoring account and at  the water break Coralstown-Kinnegad held a 0-3 to 0-1 lead.  Dan Leech blazed wide when presented with a great goal  scoring chance when the water was consumed  but a Stephen Bracken point added to the Coralstown-Kinnegad total.  Lorcan Smyth and Wayne Fox swopped points before Shamrocks produced their best football of the evening. Unfortunately it only lasted for five minutes.  Patrick Fagan pointed from play to finish a move that began with a Philly Shaw  restart  with several players involved including Efe; a great Micheál Curley surge and link with Killian Butler were key in the creation of this score. Another great move followed almost immediately and ended with Brendan O'Reilly crashing to the net to give Mullingar Shamrocks an interval lead of 1-3 to 0-5 that hardly reflected the general play.

Coralstown-Kinnegad dominated from the restart and Darren Giles kicked the first of what were four wonderful second half points from the full-forward. Dan Leech added another point before Denis Corroon levelled from a free in the sixth minute. Darren Giles pointed again, a Killian Butler free equalised before Shane Fleming pointed twice from frees.  Giles added to the Coralstown-Kinnegad lead before Shane Fleming's goal ended the game as a contest.  Another superb Darren Giles point completed the Coralstown-Kinnegad total. Killian Butler pointed a free and the match ended with Shamrocks attempting to goal from a couple of close range frees which might not prove to be a wise decision with scoring difference in operation.  Mullingar Shamrocks failed to score from play in the second half and it is interesting to note that we only kicked a single wide during the hour. Coralstown-Kinnegad's goalkeeper Seán Moran enjoyed the luxury of having seven shots drop gently onto his chest, the kind of semi-back passes that goalkeepers love to get.

However, we are still in the championship and it's knock-out football from now on with Coralstown-Kinnegad in pole position for one of the quarter-final spots.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw; Efe Siode, Eddie Moore (Marc Eivers), Pádraic McKenna; Micheál Curley, Kieran Gavin, Killian Daly; Daragh Daly, Denis Corroon (0-2) [Jordan Warde]; Brendan O'Reilly (1-0), Dónal O'Donoghue, Patrick Fagan (0-1); Lorcan Smyth (0-1) [David Gavin], Killian Butler (0-2), Dean Moore (Darren Keena).

Under-9 and Under-11 Squads Travel to St Malachy's ...

Mullingar Shamrocks’ Under-11 squad travelled to Castletown on Saturday morning  to play the Lilliput Gaels in two challenge matches.

Our Under-9 squad also travelled to play with approximately 110 youngsters enjoying a great morning’s football. Thanks to Paddy Corcoran and Damien Grennan for facilitating us and to referees Liam McDaniel, Conal Fagan, Alan Mangan and our own Micheál Burke for taking on the refereeing duties. Two All-Ireland winners at under-21 level refereeing at Under-11 level in many ways encapsulates all that’s good about the GAA. The Shamrocks’ Under-11s once more competed extremely well over the 45 minutes playing time and delighted the coaches, parents and grandparents in attendance. Special mention must go to Conor Walsh who produced an all action display of tackling, passing, blocking and team work. MJ Burke was also superb defensively and these warriors were well supported by Jonah Hassett, Luke Kelly, Hugo Corroon, Paddy Colleary, Ryan McNamee, Colm Clinton, Darragh Daly, Manus Kelly and Jamie Timoney. Well done to every player involved on Saturday.

The following players were on duty for Shamrocks : Hugo Corroon, Dylan Byrne, Scott Farrelly, Padraig Regan, Ryan McNamee, Oisin Gavin, Christy Joyce, Colm Clinton, Paddy Colleary, John Gilbride, Luke Kelly, Harry Tilson, Jamie Timoney, Killian Hand, Cian Traynor, Conor Walsh, Theo Kelly, Alfie Rock, Darragh Daly, Shane Bonar, Oliver Keane, MJ Burke, Fionn Ledwith, Manus Kelly, Jamie Murtagh, Evan Nohilly, Liam Forde, Eoin Mulhern, Elliott Harte, Noah Smyth, Sam Briody, Conor Matthews, Jonah Hassett, Ben Murphy and Charlie Murtagh. Under-16 LGF lose out to The Downs

Shamrocks Under-16 girls lost to The Downs in a competitive high scoring contest on Friday night. Whilst both teams were evenly matched throughout, The Downs ability to take their scoring chances in the first half ultimately proved the difference between the teams. The Shamrocks girls showed incredible heart, workrate and tackling throughout and some good combination play in the second half resulted in some great scores. This team improved considerably on their first outing and are a very committed  group.
