Ned Moore ratified as team manager

Mullingar Shamrocks Senior Football Management team for 2020 was ratified on Wednesday at the club's monthly meeting. 

Ned Moore continues as manager and is joined by, Croghan County Offaly native and former Offaly goalkeeper Laz Molloy as coach and trainer with Barry Maguire and Gerry Nohilly continuing as part of the management team. Enda Monaghan stepped down from management after two years of wonderful service to the club. The club would like to thank Enda for his contribution. Enda was of course part of the management team that achieved the never-to-be forgotten senior football title in 2018. 

Laz Molloy brings a substantial management and coaching record to the table. Laz made a sensational inter-county championship debut for Offaly in 1984 against Longford. Younger readers might find it difficult to believe that Offaly were one of the top teams in the country at the time and in 1982 defeated Kerry and deprived the county of the historic five-in-a-row All-Ireland titles. Offaly also had one of the greatest goalkeepers ever to play the game in Martin Furlong.

In 1984 Martin Furlong was injured which left Offaly without a sub goalkeeper for the match against Longford.  Eugene Magee, one of the all-time great managers,  became aware that Laz was in Croke Park as a supporter, having played a challenge match in Dublin that morning. Up in the stands, Laz chatted with PJ Cunningham, who told him that Furlong was ruled out.

When Cunningham learned that Laz  had his playing gear with him, he got word to McGee.

Shortly afterwards, the words “Could Laz Molloy please report to the Offaly dressing-room” blared over the Croke Park public address system. .

In an interview in the Daily Mirror in 2015 Molloy explained what happened next.: “I went back up to the car and got the gear out of it and you still wouldn’t be thinking that you’re ever going to be playing. Dinny Wynne was in goals but Longford got three goals in the first half.

“It was most unusual, we were over in the Cusack Stand side sitting in the dugout.

“I remember sitting beside Seamus Darby [the man who scored the most famous goal in the history of the GAA against Kerry in 1982]. The next thing one of the selectors came across the field for the two of us.

“We went in at half-time, he put me on and things worked out fairly well anyway.”

Offaly came from five points down to win by five, with Matt Connor, a candidate for the title of the Greatest Footballer of All-Time putting in a typically brilliant  display, notching 2-5, and Laz Molloy making some brilliant saves.

Congrats Claire ...

Another great victory for Claire Fagan in the Celtic International Cross-Country Championships in Stirling, Scotland. Claire was first home in the Under-23 event in an excellent time of 31.04  despite appalling conditions underfoot and overhead at Run Stirling.

Claire also led the Irish team to the silver medals in the international under-23 team event that featured Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England.

Operation Transformation and Mullingar Shamrocks

Ireland Lights Up with the GAA is a national initiative to improve the health of the country through GAA clubs and communities across Ireland. Mullinga r Shamrocks GAA Club like clubs  across Ireland will be coming on board with RTÉ's Operation Transformation and turning on their floodlights/lighting systems between 7pm-8pm each Monday for a seven-week period (13th January – 24th February, 2020) as Operation Transformation returns to our screens for 2020.

We’re coming on board with Operation Transformation and the GAA for Ireland Lights Up. Every Monday from 13th January – 24th February, 2020 our club will be open and lit up for you, your family and friends to come and walk from 7pm to 8pm.

We want everyone to come and join for Ireland Lights Up 2020!

Healthy Club Officer Joan Ormsby will be there to welcome you and all are welcome to come to this event. Mullingar Shamrocks GAA Club is a very Family Friendly club so please bring granny, granddad, your neighbours and the kids with you for a stretch of the legs.

Last Man Standing

So you think you know your football form? Mullingar Shamrocks invites you to put that knowledge to the test by entering the club's Last Man Standing Competition.  Entry forms are available from several club members.

The final date for the return of the  entries is Friday 24 January.

Don’t miss out on the fun. Select two teams to win each week of the National Football League, you can't pick the same team twice and the last man standing wins the first prize of €300.

Entry is a nominal sum of €5.

Membership Fees

Unfortunately, it’s that time of year when membership fees fall due. The good news is that a facility to pay club membership for Mullingar Shamrocks is now active online at https://mullingarshamrocks.clubifyapp.com/membership_products

Our three registrars, Anthony Clinton, Karen Hegarty and Des Maguire (or any other member of the executive) are available to receive the relevant fees for 2020 which are:

Full Membership: (Over-18 years of age  with full voting rights at AGM and eligible to play and  hold positions in club), €50.

Ladies Gaelic Football Adult: €75. (Registration fee and levy to LGFA). 

Ladies Gaelic Football Under-18: €55 (Registration fee and levy to LGFA). 

Ladies Gaelic Football 16 and under: €25 (Registration fee and levy to LGFA). 

Social Membership/Youth Membership/Full-time 3rd level Student Membership: (Eligible to participate in all club social activities and includes playing membership for Youth members and Full-Time 3rd level students). €30.

Family Membership: (2x adult social membership and juvenile registration for children), €100.
