Senior Championship

Crookedwood 1-17 Brownstown 1-16 In round 3 of the championship we took on Brownstown, knowing that anything less than a win would almost certainly end our interest in this year’s campaign. The last time both sides met in a championship game was the 2015 Intermediate final, where Brownstown emerged victorious by a mere two points. Four years on, there was little to choose between the teams, but it can be argued that both sides have improved over the years. We raced into an early three-point lead before Brownstown drew level with a well taken goal. It was tit for tat after that goal until Shane McGovern pounced for a goal of our with around 25 minutes on the clock, to put us three clear. However, our opponents fired over three unanswered points to level the game again as half-time approached. Crucially in injury time, Brian McLoughlin won a free, which Barry O’Mara duly converted, and then Brian got on the scoring sheet himself when he shot over a point under pressure to give us a two-point lead at the break, 1-10 to 1-8. Brownstown controlled the third quarter, outscoring us by 5 points to 1 to take the lead, but we got back on level terms with two quick points. Both sides traded points and as the clock read sixty minutes, the game was all square. Two points in injury time from Barry gave us the advantage and we held on for a massive win after a titanic struggle. Team; Alan O’ Mara, John Kiernan, Damien Grifferty, Kevin Orme, Ronan Scally, Feichin Óg Brennan, Johnny Nally, Eddie Nally (0-1), Brendan McCarthy (0-1), Brian McLoughlin (0-2), Shane McGovern (1-4), Conor Savage, Ian McGovern (0-1), Ger Brennan (0-1), Barry O’Mara (0-6). Subs used; Antoin Savage for J.Kiernan, Noel Yourell for D.Grifferty (inj), Adam Bate (0-1) for G.Brennan.

Crookedwood 1-18 Fr.Daltons 0-19.

A narrow, two-point victory gave us our third win in a row in the championship. We came into the game after confidence boosting wins in the previous two rounds. Even though we had an easy win over Daltons in the league earlier in the year, championship is a different story. The last championship meeting between the sides was a two years ago in the intermediate semi-final, where Ballymore men emerged victorious a after a tight game. This encounter proved to be no different, with both sides trading points early on. A brilliant solo goal from Brian McLoughlin gave us some breathing space, but Daltons hit back to keep themselves in the game. At half time we led by two points, after an evenly contested first half. The second half continued in the same vein as the first, with never more than a couple of points between the sides. As injury time commenced, we led by a goal, and Fr.Daltons laid siege to our goal in search of the equalising score, but our defence held firm, conceding a 21 yard free that was deflected over the bar. With that the final whistle sounded and we had held out for the win in what was another tough battle. We now look forward to a quarter-final, with our opponents to be decided. Team; Alan O’ Mara, John Kiernan, Seamus Savage, Damien Grifferty, Ronan Scally, Feichin Óg Brennan, Kevin Orme, Eddie Nally, Brendan McCarthy, Brian McLoughlin (1-1), Shane McGovern (0-3), Conor Savage (0-1), Ian McGovern (0-2), Ger Brennan (0-1), Barry O’Mara (0-11). Subs used; Antoin Savage for E.Nally, Noel Yourell for B.McCarthy, Adam Bate for G.Brennan.
