Senior Football Championship

Garrycastle 2-12 St Lomans 5-14

Round 5 of the championship pitted Garrycastle against St Lomans with Garrycastle looking assured of a semi final spot barring a miracle. Well that miracle almost happened when they lost by eleven points to Lomans and Mullingar Shamrocks beat Tyrellspass by 15 points. These results ended with Garrycastle making the semi final with a one point better score difference than Shamrocks. Playing without the absent Mark McCallon, Garrycastle were slow to start with Lomans getting two early points before Alex Gardiner opened the scoring with a point followed by two more for Lomans before Garrycastle got their second. Four points were shared in the next 7 minutes before Lomans got their first goal, followed by a point. Garrycastle replied with similar scores in the 22nd and 23rd minutes, the goal coming from James Sheeran. This left Garrycastle trailing by two points, 1-7 to 1-5, after 23 minutes. Between then and halftime Lomans added 1-2 to Garrycastle’s 0-2, to leave the score at the break 2-9 to 1-7. A five point lead didn’t look insurmountable but during the first five minutes of the second half Lomans added 1-3 to their tally and suddenly the game was slipping away fast. Worse was to follow with Alex Gardiner getting a second yellow card followed by a red in the 40th minute. The floodgates opened and two more goals followed for Lomans soon after. At the three quarter stage Lomans led by 16 points. In fairness to the Garrycastle lads they rallied and a goal from Tom O'Halloran and three points in the last ten minutes proved vital in the eventual deciding who got the semi final spot. This was an untypically poor performance after four solid performances in the earlier rounds. At the end of the day the scoring was at the level of previous games but the concession of 5-14 has certainly left management with plenty to work on in the coming weeks.
