U8 & U10 Blitz, Páirc Chiaráin, Sat 13th April 

Southern Gaels hosted the first U8 and U10 blitz of the season in a blustery Páirc Chiaráin. The U8s group consisted of Wolfe Tones, St.Brigids and Southern Gaels while the U10s consisted of St.Brigids, Castletown Geoghegan and Southern Gaels. The U8s put on an excellent display of ground hurling in their two matches scoring many brilliantly taken goals. The level of team work and passing from our young players shows the results of the hard work they are putting in during training.

Our young U10 team played two matches against Castletown Geoghegan. They battled hard for every ball and took some well taken scores despite heavy pressure from Castletown Geoghegan. This first duo of matches was a great way for the team to show that the winter training in the Marist in Regional Sport Centre is paying dividends. Thanks to all the parents for supporting the players and to St. Brigids, Castletown Geoghegan and Wolfe Tones for travelling.

U16 start league with win 

Cullion were the opposition for our U16s last Thursday evening and the first challenge of the league season was dealt with well. Gaels led from the off and the difference between the teams proved too much for the opposition to bounce back by half-time. This was a solid performance for the home side with a full panel to choose from and will go a long way to setting out our stall for the season. There was impressive play throughout the pitch – Cian McCarthy, Cuilleann Dowd, Eavan Farrell, Johnny Martin and Calum Devaney particularly of note – and the management team led by Tommy Murphy were well pleased although they recognised that there was room for improvement. Thanks to Cian Geary for stepping in to goals despite carrying an injury sustained on County duty.  

U12s fall to Fr. Daltons 

Last Wednesday our U12s started their league campaign against Fr. Daltons and were dealt a heavy defeat from a strong Ballymore side. The opposition seemed hungry for hurling and hit the ground running while it took Gaels a while to get into the flow of the game. The game petered out as a competition by half time and the mentors will be eager to get their charges working again in preparation for the upcoming challenge  

U14s overcome Dominics 

In a challenge match last Friday evening our U14s overcame a St. Dominics team with ease and will be encouraged by the skill levels as Féile looms large on the horizon. There were impressive performances throughout the park from goals to forwards and Martin Geary and his fellow mentors will be hopeful of continued progress as heavier challenges await them shortly.  

Training continues every Tuesday and Friday 

Thanks to all that are turning up in great numbers to our training sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays at 6.30-7.30. All age groups are catered for including U6s, U8s, U10s, U12s, U14s and U16s. Thanks to all the mentors who take the time to train our hurlers and particularly those who fill in when needed!
