Jill Draper scoops Connacht Rugby award

Heartiest congratulations to our ladies football captain Jill Draper on being named Connacht Rugby women's player of the year at the Salthill Hotel last Saturday night. Jill has worked extremely hard to achieve such an accolade and everything in the club is very proud of her.

Division 3 v Multyfarnham

After winning our first three games in Division 3 of the All-County League, we’ve now lost two in the space of a week.

An off-colour display against St Loman’s six days earlier was followed by another disappointing performance away to Multyfarnham last Saturday evening. Wearing alternative black jerseys to avoid a clash of colours, we proved no match for the hosts who ran out emphatic 5-14 to 2-8 winners. Indeed, the game was over as a contest by half-time when Multy – who we will face again in the IFC later this year – had already opened up a 2-12 to 1-4 lead.

It goes without saying that a big improvement will be required if we’re to get back to winning ways when we welcome Moate All-Whites to Kilbeggan on the weekend after next.

Team: Brendan Nannery; Aidan Stone, Warren Maher, James Fox; Niall Carey, Shaun Pidgeon, Darragh Coffey; Mel Kiernan, Dean Fitzgerald; Keith Corcoran, Conor Delaney, Brendan McMahon; James Finnegan, Alan Fennell, Nigel Scally. Subs used: Ryan Coughlan, James Hanlon and Diarmuid Egan.

Ladies footballers edge out St Joseph’s

Carparking spaces were at a premium both inside and outside St James’ Park for Friday night’s eagerly-awaited ladies football Division 3 league encounter between Kilbeggan Shamrocks and St Joseph’s.

And the local derby certainly didn’t disappoint as the hosts prevailed on a 3-6 to 3-4 scoreline after a titanic battle. Captain Jill Draper scored the opening goal, but that was cancelled out by a well-worked St Joseph’s major as the sides went into the break level on 1-4 apiece.

Kilbeggan made a great start to the second half when new recruit Ayesha Roche netted, but they then proceeded to spurn a host of chances and were rocked back on their heels when St Joseph’s struck for two quick-fire goals to take a 3-4 to 2-4 lead.

However, 1-1 from Becky Scally following her reintroduction edged the hosts back in front and Mairead McCormack followed up with a free for what proved to be the game’s final score. County camogie captain McCormack and wing back Gillian Heeney caught the eye for the more experienced Kilbeggan side who remain unbeaten in the division, but will need to make better use of possession in their remaining games if promotion is to be achieved.

Team: Sabrina Jackson; Jennifer Barrett, Eimear Fox, Orla Daly; Leah Farrell, Deirdre Robbins, Gillian Heeney; Aoibhinn Jackson, Aideen Pettit; Anna Wrafter, Mairead McCormack, Aine Pettit; Becky Scally, Jill Draper (captain), Rachel Scally. Subs: Orla Brennan, Katie Coffey, Niamh Daly, Tara Dennehy, Fiona Dixon, Sandra Garvin, Eimear Heeney, Sharon Heeney, Kelly Tormey, Aleisha Fitzgerald, Aoife Malone, Kim Cobbe and Ayesha Roche.

‘Help Lee Beat Cancer’ fundraiser

A big thank you to the supporters of Kilbeggan Shamrocks and St Joseph's for giving so generously to our collection for Lee Wallace before Friday night’s ladies football game in Kilbeggan. A total of €550 was collected at the gate and will go towards the cost of Lee's cancer treatment.

A separate collection held by the Multyfarnham club before Saturday’s All-County League Division 3 game raised €1,127.71.
