Waterford’s loss to Clare in the opening round of the Munster SHC derailed the Deise’s season, according to Sunday Game analyst Cyril Farrell.

The former Galway All-Ireland winning manager feels that the narrow defeat to Clare at Walsh Park was a big blow to Waterford and one that they never recovered from.

Farrell added that under the new format it was essential to win your home games meaning Waterford were on the backfoot from the word go.

“If you can make your home a fortress, you’re right in the mix. With three to qualify, winning your home matches will nearly get you there. Whoever comes in, that’s what they’ll be aiming for,” Farrell told the Waterford News & Star.

He added: “Anybody going in will be looking long and hard because usually a manager doesn’t go after a year. They’ll be looking at Paraic (Fanning) and wondering ‘why did he go?’. There could be a feeling that Derek McGrath isn’t finished; he could have unfinished business there.”
