Munster SHL: Kerry hurlers pull off historic win over Cork

January 14, 2018

Kerry senior hurling manager Fintan O'Connor

Kerry 1-23

Cork 1-13

It may have been a dead-rubber game, but Kerry still had reason to celebrate after recording what is believed to be their first-ever competitive victory over Cork in senior hurling at Austin Stack Park.

The Rebels paid the price for fielding a very inexperienced team as Fintan O'Connor's underdogs ran out deserving winners before a crowd of just 443. Colum Harty's first half goal helped the home side to a 1-13 to 0-6 half-time lead and the Munster champions -for whom Luke Meade was the only regular on show - were unable to stage a second half comeback, despite the tonic of a goal just after the restart.

The defeat capped a dismal pre-season campaign for Cork and their new manager John Meyler, who also suffered Munster SHL losses to Limerick and Clare.
