Henry Shefflin admits his first year at the helm of Ballyhale Shamrocks has surpassed his wildest expectations.

‘King Henry’ masterminded an impressive 2-28 to 2-11 victory over St Thomas’ in Croke Park today to land the club’s seventh All-Ireland Club SHC success and, shortly after the final whistle, he told GAA.ie: “Little did I think when I took on this job that I was going to end up here.”

The manager praised the leadership qualities shown by the experienced quartet of Michael Fennelly, Colin Fennelly, Joey Holden and TJ Reid and the example they set for their younger club-mates.

“No different to the Thomas' lads, they applied themselves very well. But when you have Michael and you have Colin and Joey and TJ and they're working harder than probably anyone else, then what are you going to do only follow them.

“That's the template you have to follow and that's probably the secret to it.

“You know, it's just about putting in that work and the hours and hours of practice. You imagine all the kids in Ballyhale today, what do they want to do tomorrow morning?

“They want to go hurl.”
