Competition for places is going to be key going forward, according to Carlow manager Colm Bonnar.

Speaking to the Carlow Nationalist ahead of the start of the NHL campaign in a few weeks time, Bonnar revealed that they are working with a large squad at the moment.

No player is guaranteed to start in the league opener against Westmeath as Bonnar is eager for the players to be kept on their toes as they embark on a new season.

"The biggest part of our job is trying to keep our appetite. That first 15 that plays Westmeath on the 28th of January, hopefully we will have our best XV out," said Bonnar.

"It will be very important we start off well there. We are going in the right direction and we have to keep it going."
