Mayo’s off-the-field problems over the winter months wasn’t a distraction for the players, according to last year’s captain Diarmuid O’Connor.

The row over financial governance that erupted between Mayo GAA and the International Supporters Foundation chairman and founder Tim O'Leary saw the county make the headlines for all the wrong reasons but what happens on the pitch is all that O'Connor and his team-mates are concerned about.

“Obviously, it is disappointing,” he remarked to the Irish Independent.

“You never want to see your county in the media for the wrong reasons. It was disappointing to see and hear about it, but I don't think it was an issue for the players.

“Most of us were too busy with the club championship, or away having a break. So we were staying out of it, I don't even know the ins and outs of it myself and am not too bothered.

“I'm just focusing on the pitch stuff.”
